It's not clear to me whether the no-new-cases in China is real, temporary or biased sampling. Lockdown is a temporary measure to prevent any new infections is betting that something will change (vaccine, season-related drop in R0). It

This is an important point lost in the noise. The problem is that cattle should apply only to containers, not hosts or VMs. Why? root. Which is also why Docker is a nonstarter for anyone who wants to use containers securely.

is mailgun/jet necessary for transactional emails? isn't their reason for existence the sending of multi-recipient emails?

I like to imagine a fantasy United States where the FAA (et al) would have stepped in, removed all the MBAs, and set the company on a sane course. More practically, I wonder what could be done to create structural impediments to the kind of

insight-free. no one has cared about RISC vs CISC for decades; they care about TCO (which includes the network effects of their preferred software stack, etc). ARMs big problem is that it's been overpromising (to the desktop and server

It's unfortunate that so many are drinking the disaggregation koolaid. FACT: you cannot disaggregate CPU from memory. Of course, that's the component you most want to do. Disaggregating IO devices is no big deal (and obviously d

dna transcription is a computation? bah. any computer uses about 10% of its capital cost in power annually. is that really a lot? sure, if you run it for 10 years, but the real sin there is running such an inefficient computer in year 9.

sometimes China is a dick. actually, a lot of the time: consider Xinjiang and Tibet. the fact that we can't afford to shun them as they deserve doesn't mean they're not being very, very naughty.

Who really thinks that stock price has anything to do with ownership? Since no one can actually buy Amazon, it's "market" price is purely speculative. In both senses.
