The conventional wisdom is that low dose aspirin prevents heart attacks by lowering the tendency for blood to clot. I've long had a theory that it was the anti-inflammatory effect that had the greatest benefit.

Maybe Vegas is different, but I saw them just a couple of weeks ago. They were doing a 50th anniversary performance at the place they did their first show together, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. They hung around in the crowd for at

Speaking of colors, you mentioned the significance of the purple/lavender in the weaving. But I don't see any in the pictures! What am I missing?

Good point, the dots were produced by pins that were round. What I meant to say was that the spacing might have been different in the two directions.

The aside about whitespace and punctuation was interesting. Is there an SVG tidy program out there that will make your files more readable?

A good scaling algorithm would take Nyquist limits into account. For example if you're using bicubic to resize to 1/3 the original size, you wouldn't use a 4x4 grid but a 12x12 grid. The formula for calculating the weights

I got the Graftrax option for my MX-80 so it could do arbitrary graphics without having to mess around with special characters.

I'm not sure the original MX-80 had square dots. Since they made this to be pixel accurate, the aspect ratio might be off because the MX-80 was off. The key test is not how it looks on screen, but how it looks printed.

If I remember correctly the serial port was an add-in card. Mine used the parallel connection.

The thing is, that used to be enough. People's standards have changed, and the house I described is no worse than most apartments. Personally I think I'd rather rent than get a condo.

My wife and I were remarking on this just yesterday. We were driving through a neighborhood of small starter homes, and noting that nobody builds anything like that anymore. A two bedroom one bathroom house is all anybody needs to start o

I have a Windows 7 PC that I decided to upgrade when the motherboard was about 10 years old. Expected it to just boot right up, motherboards haven't changed all that much. It would get to the part of the boot sequence where the windo

Even if you could magically arrive at the right point, how would you get the right momentum? If the Earth were standing completely still, it would still be spinning at a horrendous speed.

To be honest, I thought they were already completely gone. The article mentions them filing for bankruptcy in 2012. They were pretty much doomed from the start. They had built their business by taking a cut from every picture you took, fr

Yes, I knew that. Was thinking of mentioning it but decided it muddled the message. RISC didn't win in the end, it just created techniques that got borrowed to make CISC better.

Isn't industrial diamond use already a lot higher than jewelry use? It seems unlikely that consumers switching to lab-grown would "drive volume up and prices down" in any meaningful way - except perhaps for the jewelry grade

I've heard this song before. RISC was supposed to be far more efficient than CISC, and magic compilers were the key to making that happen. It didn't really turn out that way in the end.

I take issue with referring to the DB-25 as the connector you'd see for old parallel ports. I'm old enough to remember when the DB-25 was universally used for RS-232 serial ports, and parallel used an oddball larger Centronics co

I have a picture from a vacation I took in 2003, and the shirt I was wearing still hangs in my closet. I don't know if that will be the case for anything I buy today because I don't expect to live another 22 years.
