Do you get the source to the code that runs it, or is that a black box?

Maybe he was hoping for that, and didn't want to be among the ranks of the removed.

I was thinking of the 11/03, not 11/23. And the disks were in a separate enclosure, most of the dishwasher size box was empty air. Yes, the boards in the LSI series were much smaller than the equivalent PDP boards - they had a n

Try living in Minneapolis, where outdoor seating is only practical for 6 months of the year - if that. I do feel sorry for restaurants everywhere though, and all the other myriad businesses wiped out by COVID.

I spent many years using PDP-11s. I remember DECs attempt at a microcomputer, the LSI-11. It was twice the price of a PC, half as fast, and the size of a dishwasher. If you've never heard of it, it's no wonder.

Wasn't "Soul of a New Machine" written about Data General?

Costco charges enough less for gas that I'll often make a special trip to fill up there. But I also try to combine that with some shopping, which I suppose is why they do it.

I think Bill Gates makes an excellent counterpoint for this article. He was known for treating business as a competitive game, trying to win at all costs. Look at the way he acquired MS-DOS for next to nothing from Seattle Computer Produc

I love the %40, that's a great way of obfuscating an email address that I've never seen before.

The Bloom filter was invented in 1970. I wonder how well known it was in the 1980s?

Thanks for the link. Just so you know, it wasn't my downvote - I don't think HN allows you to downvote replies to your own posts.

My doctor put me on a daily 2000 IU vitamin D supplement years ago for unrelated reasons. I feel lucky now. I never did ask him what he expected the vitamin D to do for me.

I would hope the ingredients on the label would be accurate. The reason HFCS took off in the U.S. is the high tariffs applied to sugar imports to protect the domestic sugar manufacturers. Without that market distortion in place, sugar is p

I've read that Diet Coke still uses the flavor profile of New Coke. Coke Zero is the diet version closer to the original.

I have yet to start the blog I've been thinking about for 10 years. But I fully intend to build my own SSG for it. I gave a lot of thought to my motivation for doing so, and reached a simple conclusion: programmers gotta program. A

MECC was the organization that introduced me to computers. It was an HP 2000C timesharing system that could only be programmed in BASIC. I never used Oregon Trail but I did write my own game. I have to agree that a simple dialect of BASI

I read the comment as saying there's another call which gives you a recommended buffer size, but the value returned isn't always sufficient. That sounds very much like a bug to me. It could be a tweet just doesn't give enou

If you've debugged the problem to the point where you know +5 will be sufficient, you should know enough to fix the bug that required it in the first place.

I hope they make it through to the other side. When I was looking for headphones a couple of years ago, Guitar Center was the only place I could find where I could physically compare them side by side. Online will never replace that.

This is a chapter 11 bankruptcy, which usually brings about debt restructuring and some store closings. I would hope most of the stores will remain and the employees will continue as if nothing happened.

One of the things I really like about AMD Ryzen is that they don't reserve ECC just for server chips. It was a major factor in my desktop PC builds.

What's interesting is that Apple apparently plotted that graph too. They knew exactly when that crossover was going to occur, for years now.
