That does not mean performance is irrelevant, does it? Heavily used web apps benefit a lot from a fast runtime (it allows you to push the point where you have to split across servers forward quite a bit), and being able to do CPU-intensiv

I'm not sure how using 20 threads tests threading performance, but there's probably some issue that Ruby used to have that I'm not aware of. It is impressive though, that to beat the given Ruby time on my machine in SBCL, I actually had to

Hah, sometimes I do miss the downvote-article feature. I made it halfway into the article without spotting a single redeeming quality. Ad-hominem attacks on made-up opponents ... who's going to swallow that.

The process doesn't have to be conscious. People who are competent in areas one doesn't understand can come across as vaguely intimidating, while being weak in areas where one is stong might be interpreted as stupidity. As such, unless you

'Blocks' are not necessarily an improvement. Some would argue that their time has come and gone. I certainly prefer simple designs with as few quasi-separate units as possible. (That is, if you mean something in the direction of http://gam

Exactly. I've seen some Google ads that were a bit too targeted lately -- related to stuff that I searched for last week -- and it is getting spooky. I'd like to have a decent alternative. Maybe I should just get used to Yahoo, but this l

Hm, re-reading the thing, you might be right -- though I'm still not sure. Anyway, the whole piece seems to be setting up a straw man just to tear it down. Is anyone really that naive about hydrogen?

The dichotomy between single assignment and variable-name reuse seems to be false. In OCaml, you can just rebind the same variable name again halfway a function body, which will cause a new variable with that name to be bound, having a sc
