Pawnshops are collateralized loans for the poor. If the goal is to tax the rich, just be more direct and tax the rich. A wealth tax would work, no need for elaborate schemes.

If you tax loans that means every credit card purchase or mortgage would trigger a tax. If you receive a $400k loan for a mortgage, that would mean something like $100k in taxes for an upper middle earner.

What do you make of the claim in this article [1], which says that intermediate host species were found within 4 months of SARS1 outbreak, and within 9 months of MERS outbreak? Admittedly I can't find the underlying source for his clai

The laws I mentioned (14th amendment and California Prop 209) only apply to the Federal government and California. There are other laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and those may be applied

Worth noting this policy is contrary to the 14th amendment’s equal protection clause, and also a California law prohibiting discrimination based on race that was recently upheld by a large majority vote.

Isn't the whole issue with drugs the fact that they have a huge upfront cost in terms of research, and then they are basically free to produce? If you just do cost plus, then the research can't get (retroactively) funded. This is

While Tether may indeed be a fractional reserve, that doesn't seem like an existential threat to bitcoin. At any given time, a small scale bitcoin holder (<1000BTC) can liquidate their entire position on Coinbase and withdraw USD to

Right, but in crypto world most people regard coins held in custody as different from coins held in a private wallet. The Mt Gox experience was a good lesson on this topic, if it’s not your keys, it’s not your bitcoin. In comparison, very f

There is a subtle distinction though. When a bank lends out US dollars, they are effectively creating new money that is treated as “real” money. They don’t technically lend out the deposits. In contrast, crypto lenders can’t create new bitc

If this happens you can usually reach out to Google to see if they will refund the charge. They don’t really benefit from making $72k of a solo developer’s buggy code. I’ve done it once and their team was very helpful and reversed the charg
