I don't think that's what they're doing. Intersection of people who care about privacy and people who wouldn't see through that tactic is tiny. They are using the NHS brand to get high adoption. Plus the UK govt slogan r

I think the way it works now is correct. Using escape characters is more common than writing strings with backslashes. The more common case should be default.

If you are low on disk space you want something predictable to happen: the oldest logs are deleted and the newest logs are written. This would be a nightmare to achieve with SQLite, as said above it's just way too complicated.

There's no such thing as "strongly" or "weakly" typed languages. Those terms have no definition and are meaningless. Yes Wikipedia will tell you that C and JS are weakly typed, but what attribute is it that C and JS

That is the difference between a dynamically typed language (like Python) and an untyped language (like JS). The dynamically typed language checks types at runtime, whereas the untyped language doesn't.

How would you get any privacy? I don't think other people on the train are going to be happy with me dictating "eggplant emoji smirk emoji" to a wearable.

If you find that shocking you would probably drop dead at seeing what Lisp programmers get up to with macros :) Language flexibility doesn't obscure the readability of code. It enhances it. In a flexible language, unclear code is alway

By what mechanism? Increased pressure on healthcare systems increases mortality not decreases it. It doesn't make sense to me that Sweden could get lower absolute mortality by avoiding lockdowns.

The USA has one of the most insane systems on the planet. There's 50 states plus DC. Each with their own laws which apply to anybody selling in that state, so if a business is selling in 50 states then they need to follow 50 sets of la

If you play Russian roulette and survive, was the decision to play Russian roulette a good one? If you make a bad decision but it works out OK, then it's still a bad decision. If you make a good decision and it doesn't work out, y

Honestly these things are all variations on a theme in JavaScript. The language is flexible enough that you can write code in many different ways and they all end up being equivalently powerful. In JavaScript you have precise control over i

At least where I live the only reason someone would be put on a psych ward is because they are a danger to themselves or others.

This is a really good analogy actually. The porn industry has higher risk for STDs but lower incidence than the general population.

Right but what I'm getting at is that when people talk about "Asian Americans" in the context of college admissions, it seems like a coded way of talking about people of Chinese descent and not e.g. Filipinos.

By "Asian American" do they mean Americans of Chinese descent or what? Does it include Filipinos? Thai? Afghans? It is an odd term.

Of course not, it's a novel virus, with novel transmission characteristics, there is no evidence for any of the interventions against it until someone tries them, and even then the evidence is usually inconclusive. Such is life.

Does there need to be a control group? Can we not detect if the vaccine is working or not without one?

The presence of antibodies is not sufficient for herd immunity. For herd immunity you need those antibodies to stick around.

It's not black and white. A person who goes to the store more often has a greater chance of being tested, than someone who goes infrequently. There's also the issue that people are trying to avoid other human beings right now, inc

Strongly disagree. The slots will immediately book out to the last available date. So if slots are available in 10 days that just means that everybody has to wait 10 days for their delivery. Increasing latency doesn't increase throughp

2 meters is only sufficient for droplet transmission (e.g. breathing). Aerosol transmission (e.g. a sneeze or heavy cough) can travel much further than 2m. Granted these are for confined spaces and outdoors it will depend on factors such as

Could that not be because of shortages? If there's a shortage of ventilators then only the very sickest patients will get them. Don't see how it's valid to compare numbers against disease in "peacetime".

Who is undermining the meaning? Veggie burgers have been called that for decades. The meaning of burger as a cooked patty between two round pieces of bread is well established (chicken burger, falafel burger, whatever).

Yeah basically the extreme correlation of mortality with age makes it hard to state a mortality rate. Small changes in the population age distribution create big changes in mortality.
