Only commands capable of doing something meaningful with symlinks need such a flag. These are a minority.

I'm quite sure a large number of people working in an office are truly productive only an hour per day as well. The only difference is what gets in the way of real work.

Of course RMS is upset about Android. Linux came to be, or at least became popular, largely as a result of the GNU project's complete failure to produce a kernel. This in itself has been an annoyance to RMS, thus the constant GNU/Linux ra

So what jwatte said is wrong? I don't know such details about x86. I was thinking mainly of ARM and MIPS.

That table is vastly simplified. As the document explains, the exact timings cannot be listed in a simple table due to the complexities of out-of-order multi-issue execution. A shifted operand is frequently required to be available as input

There is nothing bizarre about implementing mode switching as part of a jump instruction. Every CPU I know of with more than one mode implements switching with some kind of jump instruction.

The latest and greatest ARM processor (Cortex-A9) has a penalty for shifting. Their shifts are a bit strange, because any alu op can shift one of the operands. For standard alu ops, shifting by an immediate costs one extra cycle, and shift

Pointless other than as an exercise in asm writing. A port scanner is one of the most I/O-bound applications imaginable.

I will refuse to work anywhere Clearcase is used for two reasons: 1) the horrors of using it are unspeakable, and 2) it is a good indicator that the company will not be a fun place to work for other reasons.

One thing I've tripped over with git-svn was SVN's inability to replace a directory with a file in a single commit. Git allowed this (as it should), but pushing the commit to the SVN repo failed with some strange error message. On the whol

The whole talking to each other thing also breaks down if the team consists of thousands of people spread all over the world. Git was specifically designed with this in mind.

All the important hardware is, as I said, Intel and thus has good driver support. My Vaio Z additionally has an nvidia GPU, Ricoh SD/MS controller, Broadcom Bluetooth, and Ricoh camera. I'm using only the Intel GPU so I can't comment on t

I have a Vaio Z, and the only thing that doesn't work smoothly is dynamic GPU switching. This is not a problem specific to the Vaio, it is simply not supported by Xorg (yet?). All other important hardware is Intel so driver support is exc

Polymorphism as with sockaddr and XEvent types is safe. The values are always (in a correct program) read as the same type they were written so there is no type punning.

I'm flying from LHR T5 this week. Will try the BA Android app, which worked great flying from ARN earlier this year. The app displays a barcode they scan, so it's pretty much equivalent to using a PDF.

I haven't had time to distill the ICEs into proper bug reports anyone would want to touch. The last failure was easy to reduce, and I added a note to an already open entry for what seemed to be another instance of the same bug.

I tried this and immediately hit three internal compiler errors and one rejection of perfectly valid code. As far as I am concerned, this is not a compiler.
