The ATM part was amusing. It's still used in the telco space; xDSL runs over ATM, generally speaking. It's not obvious that TCP/IP would win. I wonder how much of its victory was because it was basically free; the specs were

The original article is worth a read. They talk about fiber strength, hypothesize about why, debunk some current conceptions, then test their hupotheses. Then they edit a silkworm's genes as a real world test. I mean dang.

One major weirdness with ipv6 is that it occasionally works with ipv4 and it's unclear why. Example: we run a bunch of endpoints on ipv4, but get ipv6 IPs in our logs. How? Are there 6-to-4 translators out there at ISP edges? Unknowns

Deregulation worked, but in a capitalistic society bigness has benefits. Rolling up your competitors has advantages, both from a financial and business point of view. The problem isn't deregulation, it's preserving competition.

About #1, FYI you should never trust the content-length of an HTTP request. It actually says that in one of the spec versions or another. The problem with writing the length out at the beginning of the message is that you need to know the l

"I actually use SLIP for packetisation over TCP anyway" Whoa, that's an acronym I haven't heard in a long time. SLIP/TCP seems redundant. Your serial encoding IP then sending it over TCP/IP? Is this a tunnel?

The point of the article is that Apple made the phone feel much lighter than a straight up mass reduction would indicate. It's actually something that Apple's design team is really good at. If you've ever held an IPP or ipad

So really, what you need to do is put another box between your DSL/4G modems and your gateway. I'm assuming the gateway has NAT, and your DSL modem has to be NAT. So you'll go to a triple NAT, which is less than ideal. You ca

Question: if pflog1 isn't created, does pf work as expected? Since tcpdump presumably isn't logging anything going out of pflog1, it implies that the data isn't being sent to pflog1. That implies that it's something upst
