When the Windows 11 beta showed up with the ads and distractions built in, I finally switched my last computer to a KDE Linux. Love the Windows UI, but their commitment to putting ads in the OS means the OS is no longer the product. Their u

Oof. That's really complicated and still doesn't do the trick. Concrete example -- when searching Reddit, I can check a box to confine the search to the current subreddit I'm on. That does a wonderful job of restricting resul

One thing I find amazing is that "single box" search engines are still the standard. The biggest pain point of using Google is when it incorrectly guesses what you are trying to search. But the user is only allowed to type in one

Why would undergraduates be more representative of society than Mechanical Turk users? Surely the Turk users span a much wider range of age and geolocation.

That's a great point. The LIMIT workaround takes no knowledge of the data distribution, but an optimizer could do much better with some statistics such as estimated percentiles.

Exactly. So the workaround looks like: - Make one query with LIMIT of 5% - If it returns LIMIT rows, do a query with NOT INDEXED Which is surprising; why not build that into the query planning / execution in the first place?

These blog posts have been great. I'd love to see a deep dive on the query planner at some point. I've done lots of benchmarking SQLite while writing ducks [1], and found some interesting stuff. It seems like SQLite will only use

Oh yeah. It was a good day when the ducks name turned up! The "plural animal" thing references pandas / polars, which are like the OLAP version of ducks. Good near-homonym too. Index? In ducks! The API layer sounds like a gr

HN is really up on SQLite at the moment. If an AI were trained to write hit HN posts, "Writing Rust Extensions For SQLite" would probably be in the top results.

TFA appears to be about adapting SQLite for OLAP workloads. I do not understand the rationale. Why try to adapt a row-based storage system for OLAP? Why not just use a column store?

Been on Manjaro+NVidia for a few years now. Gaming works very well, especially for recent games (2017+). Most "Windows only" games play perfectly. Older games are hit or miss, but misses are pretty rare.

When computers started beating humans at chess, there was a similar moment of anxiety. One good quote from that era: "You should be no more concerned that a computer can beat you in chess than that a car can beat you in a race." T
