After having to endure my university's switch to Live@Edu (Outlook Webaccess in cloud) I can only envy those that would be so lucky to have Gmail for their uni email service.

Well... you kind-of do. Once something like DVD-Decrypter or Handbrake comes out for your format (making ripping a one click affair) then the casuals might start figuring it out... that's why they adapt.

I worry that they are just retargeting Flash to HTML5/canvas instead of redeveloping/expanding the Flash production environment as a true standards-based authoring tool. It makes me think of exporting HTML documents from Word (or to be kind

Flash will always(ish) have a purpose. It brings extra 'closer-to-the-OS' features that only a native plugin currently can. Its just that the particular features for which it has recently been popular are now available directly from the bro

Right, but not many organisations are in a position to come along and do us all* a big favour as Google is here. Between being able to afford it, having a browser and a mobile OS, and YouTube, they are really holding the right cards to do t

I love the video player they're using. Instead of 'scrubbing' over the video when you drag the playhead during playback (like most online video), it has something like the Red Book Audio CD 'search' algorithm; it plays a short sample over a

With regards to video, if the lack of Flash support on Apple devices means faster uptake of the HTML5 video tag, then that's no bad thing.

Yeah, but they've gotten really good at copying that from Apple (HP Envy, HP Slate) so it might not be a problem.

I never would have thought of making that parallel. Maybe because Windows PCs don't have the limited interaction/input options of a touchscreen phone, nor the limited system resources, making this an apples to oranges comparison? Also, like

Honestly, I still think people writing native code and using the native APIs for a platform like the iPhone is something worth enforcing. On the desktop multiplatform development toolkits consistently fail to deliver a user experience that

I was refering to the visual styling. HP Slate might not be based on the iPad, but surely it draws on the iPhone/iPod and/or MBP, just as the HP Envy does. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, just that it seems to be a theme in HP'

Between this and the envy it seems like HP's strategy at the moment involves looking like (but not being) Apple products... I wonder if they will raise the same kind of ire from Steve Jobs that resulted in the Apple-HTC patent lawsuit?

Maybe for your own site, yeah. But for sites that you've built and handed off? Are you going to update them for free? Are the clients going to pay you (again) to rework the interface (non-trivial) for a small minority of users?
