Because... Windows? Plenty of thumbdrive and portable harddrive manufactures make use of this 'feature' to show a splash menu/crapware launcher on insertion of the drive, so I guess they like the idea.

I use a prepaid phone for an inbound-only number for my business. Just gotta remember to add some credit if I'm still using it in a year's time, so the number doesn't get repossessed.

I don't know about Viacom's channels, but I swear nearly every major label musician/artist's channel that I've been to lately has had at least one of their videos missing due to a takedown request from their own record company. That said, m

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all Youtube HD videos either H264 (.mp4) or H264 in an .flv container? I don't see why a particular container format would prevent hardware decoding of the H264 video stream.

I'm still getting 60% (of one core) CPU utilisation playing HD youtube videos. Playing HTML5 video tag version of the same video, its only about 20% utilisation. As far as I can remember, 60% is about what it was at before, so I'm not reall

When (I'm hoping it's 'when') this becomes stable I'm thinking a Mac port of this would make a lot of people happy. Despite Steve's fighting words I think most Mac users out there would prefer not to be second-class citizens on the web, and

You know what's worse than that? People using 'nyt' for the word 'night' (ie. 'last nyt'). At least n-e-1 actually phonetically resolves to something sounding like 'anyone'. In my mind, 'nyt' would be 'nit' (or maybe nyit?). On the other ha

I produce electronic music. These days production is all computer based, and tech knowledge gets you a long way. Also if you can learn tech skills you can probably also come to understand things like dynamics processing and frequency ranges

I love how they are making use of what is essentially a 'Flash hack' commonly used by shady types to get around popup blockers – load a Flash object and use that to launch a new window – to show a popup preaching the virtues of Flash.

When that spreadsheet of Facebook alternatives was posted the other day, this one ticked the most boxes. Taking a look at their site though, I was greeted by talk of protocols and invited to 'get code'. I know its just early days, but this

For a start, I didn't realise the extent of Flash's Mac woes. I'm familiar with the problems with CPU usage during video playback (hence I implemented YouTube's relatively solid player in the site), and since switching to Mac as my main OS

I can see the Penumbra engine being used to build some 90's style point-and-click adventure games in first person 3d, if someone was so inclined. Maybe even something along the lines of Myst. However those genres are probably dead for a rea

When I saw the title of this post my brain brought up mental images of 'minigun' and 'autocannon' and sort-of combined the two, and as such this really wasn't what I was expecting... neat, though.

I'm mainly interested in hearing if any new Unity3d games are being allowed under the new ToS. The last we've heard from the Unity team is this from two weeks ago: http://blogs.unity3d.com/2010/04/10/unity-and-the-iphone-os-... It's not e

I think a big part of the problem with the Mac games market is that to some people, Mac games are worth less. I myself would never buy a Mac-only game (ie, a Mac OS only license) despite being a fairly avid gamer (and game design major) and
