Not in the industry I work in - AAA gamedev. Art folks typically would have two, or even three monitors - so good solutions for docking across them (and still working) are required. A chrome browser by itself can't work that - it'

Rephrasing it this way, makes me rethink what I knew. Thanks!

The pitfall was if I have to extend it with new exceptions, one had to go and fix all code that was handling it to handle this one too. Works great in monorepo, but not sure if code is spread out.

I loved Java checked exceptions when learning the language (coming from C++), then understood the biggest pitfall - if you need to extend with new exception, or remove existing you have to change all the code using it (maybe there are bette

Well, it's not on me, because I'm often the user of someones library, framework, etc, and then it's up to whether it was concious or unconcious decision that the type behaved that way, and then you have to mix things to work

I completely get it, that the language science has developed works great for it's own practicioners, but not really well for outsiders. Good luck explaining these "*values" to someone that hasn't touched C++ in a while.

Yup - I wish that was not the case, I've learned relatively recently that the state the variable becomes (after moving) is "valid, but unspecified" - e.g. you can still destroy it (I guess how would RAII work otherwise), you

To this day, I'm still having trouble remembering these names: lvalue, rvalue, prvalue, xvalue, glvalue. While there was only lvalue, and rvalue - it was easy - LEFT and RIGHT - gives you the right intuition. But now - if it has identi

This is awesome, but ... If you process requires deterministic results (speaking about floats/doubles mostly here), then you need to get this straight.

I've been playing with Termux, both on Chromebook (Eve), and my Samsung Galaxy S22 - pretty cool, though hit some issue with recent `bazel` - as newer versions try to access a `/dev` endpoint that's not available. Quick fix,

IMHO, Tail call optimization makes sense only when it's enforced (like in clojure), otherwise it's wild.

I was listening to Matt Godbolt's the Two's Complement podcast "Squashing Compilers" and this got my attention, I think this was Ben Rady sharing his recent systemd issue - seems like related https://youtu.be&

Some allocators may even "hold" on to the freed (from another thread) memory, until the original thread deletes it (which is not the case here), or that thread dies, and then they go on "gc"-ing it.

Thank you both for the answers. Some further googling led me to "totalization agreements" and then it's per country. It looks like India (for example) may not have such an agreement, but say Austriallia has it. That to be sai

I do have work profile, and used it in the past, but as soon as you really want to use it as work profile, then some admin program would like to take over your phone, and not just your work profile - so no "dev mode", etc. (Or may

There are a lot of bad angles to this, here is another one: What happens to people's social security they've build for the years they've been on H1B? (Or J1, etc. before that)? It's technically gone...

for me too - in a way a "virtual" monorepo - as if all these packages belong in some ideal monorepo, even though they don't.

If the monorepo is build and tested by single build system (bazel, buck, etc.), then it can graph leaf dependencies with no users. For example library + tests, but no one using it (granted it might be something new popping out, still in ear

That's not true - you can handle this pretty well with exceptions (yes it's nagging that you have to add them, but doable)... Not so much without.

I've heard Eiffel has them better, but haven't used it. And then Koka too, but I have zero experience... Someon might shine light here about this...

^^^ - This - my recent one, came to the realization that dealing with memory mapped files is much harder without exceptions (not that exceptions make it easier, but at least possible). Why? Let's say you've opened a memory mapped
