Yeah, the app level statistics are wrong. For the total screentime, it looks about right to me. 8 hours at work, a couple hours of email on either end, entertainment for an hour, then reading on a screen in bed.

Just wait until they start working. Screentime on macOS is showing me I'm looking at screens over 80% of my waking hours.

I've always been partial to `gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=merged.pdf *.pdf`. gs is installable via homebrew.

It makes sense to me economically. There are probably 1000x as many consumers as prolific creators. It would be nice for casual creators on mobile devices to have better tools, and it looks like we're starting to get there with better

I've standardized on Google Drive, which kind of works. Not good enough version control features for code though, which is why I still need git. Been kicking around the idea of moving to git only, but the learning curve is steep (impos

I don't understand how people can get work done in the post-file world. Any project I've got that's more complicated than a todo list has text files, images, code, links to websites, emails, and typeset documents. The only t

The rest of the electric utility industry sees California as a troubled place ever since the days of rolling blackouts from Enron's market manipulation. I'm not sure if it's the regulatory environment or the market or utility

There's a clever software engineering resume out there in the same style (and also in the style of Leonard da Vinci's resume): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1086527

Excel does support multiple tables per sheet through the format as table (?!) feature. But yeah, still hard to make those multiple Excel tables look good with sheet-wide column and row sizes.

Probably a good time to mention this* excellent piece on how they make money. In short: it’s interest on cash deposits. Not payment for order flow. * https://www.kalzumeus.com/2019/6/26/how-brokerages-make-mon

Sounds like an automat[1]? Interesting theory in the link that they died off in the 70s because coins were no longer worth enough to buy a decent amount of food and bills couldn't be accepted by machine yet. [1] https://en.w

Part of the difference is the level of competition with the other students. In math at least, if you want to be in classes with and compete against Putnam winners, there are only 4 or 5 schools you can go to do that.

I'd guess the energy costs would be similar since it's roughly the same hardware (CPUs, memory, radio transmitters) but minus the display.

My cellphone (pocket computer) needs 10 Wh to run all day. For the same amount of energy, the lights in my office will run for 6 minutes. I'm not buying this "must decomputerize" pitch.

I experienced this "diet" when I was having a tough time at work. Turned out for me that stress eating calories added up to way more than what the insomnia and nervous thinking burned. Your results may vary.

When I was studying math, I enjoyed the challenge of writing LaTeX. It gave me a break from struggling with (e.g.) a real analysis proof to instead think about typography, struggle with syntax, and tweak my document layout.

My guess is Siemens is going for it because if you can get the load/generation balancing right, it costs much less than hardening. Might also be more resilient. Only way to fully harden these systems is underground them at 10 (100?) ti

I don't think anyone has used the LoRa radio signals for triangulating position, but GPS chips are getting really cheap now too. I've been playing around with a $40 GPS module[1] that claims a pretty standard 3 meter accuracy. [1]

There have been 15 year solar power purchase agreements signed already for $0.025/kWh [1]. Assuming they get to 50% efficiency, that's $1.69/gallon. Sounds crazy low, but I hope it's true. [1] https://www.util
