That was(is?) the benchmark for gcc optimizations: it has to pay for itself on the compiler: if the resulting compiler code is faster but the added compilation time is even greater, it s not worth it.

Well, we quite dont know since AFAICT GPUs instruction sets (real instruction set, not IR) are completely closed, so the first reason they're difficult to program is by secrecy, not technical.

I also like MX bust only use it to handle constraints and find a suitable use of a chip resources. After I have all resources planned it's CMSIS all the way, not that complex.

Even then, hashing and lookup is completely unnecessary in a hot path. Having a variable with a compiled regex is not unpythonic AFAIK
