This is the best example of Poe's Law I've ever come across [1]. I honestly can't tell if this is brutal satire or someone's legit endgame. The more I watch the more inclined to think it's satire, but there's a

A scene was shot right next to my muni stop at Embarcadero and Folsom. I’d think about this movie every day, if for no other reason thinking about how they made that area look like no traffic existed.

I've implemented Django+DRF+React in several projects. The thrust of my arguement is that, were Django started today and not 17 years ago, it would account for these concepts more than templates do. Django contrib exists to be a home f

I've been using Django for over a decade. I don't think most of these are a big deal and outright disagree with others. Happy to offer my own criticisms of django to add value to this comment thread. My real criticism of Django is

Looking at the Theranos comment history on HN is a journey [1]. From the very beginning there was a lot of skepticism. [1] https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=30&prefix=false&q...

I'm slowly coming around to web3 as an idea after giving it a lot of thought. For me, MMOs are a great boostrap for thinking about this. People pay real money for in-game items and currency...usually from the developer, but web3 enable

It's not strictly anti-piracy, though the roots are in it. Consumers aren't the only source of requirements. It goes back to content protection deals Disney has cut for years and the reciprocity requirements.

By that logic, no DRM makes sense at all, which is a take I understand but I think misses a lot of nuance.

In your case, the likely reason is because the DRM is done in software and not hardware, making it easier to crack, and Disney as a policy avoids their highest resolution content going through software decoding.

I’ve used Alexa since shortly after its release. We use it daily for music, lights, timers, and random questions like what internal temperature to cook chicken to. All our use cases are either when our hands aren’t free or the request is ro

We’re probably quibbling over semantics here. I use important in the dictionary sense of having a profound effect on survival. The company won’t go out of business if those VM tasks don’t get done for a couple quarter.

I don't think fiction is Brian Herbert's gift. If you haven't, I encourage you to read Dreamer of Dune. It's his biography of Frank Herbert. While I loathe his contribution to fiction, I found his biography of his dad we

First off, how badly does the parent company need you to be on their VMs? It's probably necessary work, but not important. Everyone will still have jobs if it doesn't finish for a couple quarters. In the meantime, let your boss

I'm not sure that really is the story. Homes are not exactly safer, and there was a tornado warning for all of Madison county. Perhaps you've seen photos of what these things do to small wooden structures. Yes, their home was prob

Yeah I know what you meant. If you're looking for synopsis beyond existing text promos, it's still a significant cost to watch and summarize. It's still not a lot cheaper and quite arduous.

"100 channels and nothing's on" is an old phenomenon. People become paralyzed by choice because they feel they need to make the optimal choice, which simply doesn't exist.

I think there’s some post hoc ergo prompter hoc with blaming recommendations if someone doesn’t want to watch what’s being recommended. If you watch what’s recommended to you and you don’t like it…that’s a bad recommendation. If you don’t e

We explored that (I believe Netflix did, too). The challenge became making relevant promos. I don’t know a lot about the science of producing trailers, but if you look at old ones they are more dated than the movie. The cost of what you’re

All interviewing comes down to answering three questions: 1. Can they do the job? 2. Will they like the job? 3. Will I like working with them? 1 and 2 are the easiest to determine, yet we overemphasize it in interview time. We usually save
