I think this is due to the speed at which techies' skills rot. You stay in the same place doing the same thing for 5 years and you have a skill set that no exciting employer (incuding your current one) is going to want. That's why we all

Indeed, for callbacks and such I find it good to just think of the web browser as just another web service client calling an API: that's where you draw your line of trust (your own code running in your own environment).
