With these new GSM smartwatches, wouldn’t it make sense to give a kid a watch rather than a phone? He can initiate and receive calls from there (I’d switch off GPS tracking) but the display is too small to do much else I’m thinking. Sure, t

IMO that only works when it's coupled with progress in governance. Compare Venezuela to India over the last 30 years, and extrapolate into the near future what will happen there. Edit: Just to anticipate the obligatory "Venezuala

That's just nuts. You'd think that there are at least state-level regulations to have sufficient sidewalks, car culture or not. I mean at some point it's a health and safety issue (when you can't even get to the doctor&#

In Switzerland one of the things we'd learn in primary school age was to walk roads without sidewalks - always on the left side such that incoming cars are in front, and by paying lots of attention and walking in single file. Since car

You mean there were no sidewalks? That's the thing, often in the US I felt very boxed into a place, simply because I couldn't just do a Cartman and 'go home' (or someplace else).

I’ve recently been at a master students’ thesis defense where a method was discussed that is supposed to speed up algorithms by deciding whether to run them on GPU or CPU. The method is to look at the program code with deep learning algorit

On GPUs you can program the L1 cache at least. I’ve never had much success with it though, as in more recent architectures I found the default L1 and the schedulers are doing a good job at keeping occupancy high and by wiring it you either

In Switzerland (pop 8M), tax authority is not hold by federal government but by the 26 cantons[1]. Because the central government would be way too big for that much power in the eyes of the Swiss people. [1]that’s also why we have a bunch o

I think the idea is for it to be both machine friendly and MATLAB/python users friendly, by bringing the best of Fortran into the modern world and with a good type system. The types are very machine oriented but with nice abstractions

As someone who likes Fortran90+ for numerics in HPC, I'd put it this way: * Pointers are required mainly so you can do pointer swaps and be sure there is no unnecessary allocation (in simulations this often means being sure there'

yes, latency vs. throughput, the main idea also behind GPU computing. It worked there well, and CPUs are incredibly going to sacrifice latency for throughout as well.
