Now the really puzzling question is: How would someone learn about this particular saying without seeing it in writing? Are there actually people still using "hear hear" in everyday speech?

Not in the Bay Area. Every developer or ops person I know either has roommates or has a similar 1.5-hour commute.

In the bay area the average for juniors is only 90k, and most people cap out at 120k or so, unless they have top-tier degrees, incredible negotiating skills, or something.

Fact: IRC doen't persist chat messages on the server, so to view old messages you need to install a bot that provides you with the last n messages... and you have to manually query the bot for them. No thanks. Have you people heard of

As a climate change believer, I'm getting worried that a lot of svientists out there are just telling us all what we want to hear. It's incredibly fun to tell people that the world is going to end in 20 tears due to climate change

MicroMasters? Is that like a Bachelor's without calling it a Bachelor's, so people keep paying exorbitant amounts of money to attend physical classes to ultimately get a piece of paper? Ok MIT.

Well duh. If we don't need degrees to create computer programs, then why would someone need a degree for any other job in the world, which just involve pushing buttons on software programs we create?

Does anyone have any tips on determining if a given CPU core will fit onto a given FPGA? Most of the boards in the hobbyist price range seem kinda ... underwhelming.

I think the real reasons are: Unity, Unreal Engine, HTML5, etc. People who would want to contribute never find BFW, instead they make their own games and satisfy their creativity that way.

We've failed as a culture to inform people that this can and will happen. No matter how trendy a company is, if there's a hint of releasing teade secrets or using company resources for side jobs - you're out.

There are perfectly good test tracks out there, that'll let you screw around to your heart's content. Hell, drive around a walmart parking lot at 3am if you have to. Doing this on public roads? Sorry, you need to follow the laws l

Before getting into the software industry, being paid in stock seemed like a no-brainer, because I looked at tech salaries and thought that you people were all making, at a baseline, well above what it costs to live a comfortable existence,

It surprises me how many employers think that any of their engineers give a crap about the actual business. The better ones have some form of passion for creating good code, the actual business is an implementation detail.

I've heard this story before, but I don't remember a mass exodus from "da goog" as the article hideously calls it. I wonder what the motive is.

You want someone who really "gets" that information needs to be carefully preserved - not just "available" (in the manner of: http://hitchhikersguidequotes.tumblr.com/post/14333727462/mr... ).

Here's how you hire a candidate, in two steps: 1) If they provide a github/bitbucket/sourceforge link, look at what's there. Skip step 2. 2) Literally anything else. It won't work anyway.

More like a privilege because my tax dollars pay for the sharpie that they have to use to black out "buttlord" from all of the documents. That really adds up.

Hold on, what incentive does the EU have to allow US citizens to just go to the EU, get a 4-year education, with full room & board, and then possibly head back to the US? Color me skeptical.

I'm guessing he/she meant Chad Fowler. Chad's way of thinking about microservices is more radical, and more likely to cause havok if someone who doesn't know what the tradeoffs are blindly follows everything he says.
