- Very-low activity (TFA): 30% of total volume, negligible activity, they are stored in soft containers. - Low- and medium-activity, short-life (FMA-VC): 60% of total volume. They are compacted and poured in concrete, then stored. - Low-act

Here is a visualisation of of all the high-level nuclear waste produced in France over the last 60 years, superimposed over the port of Marseille. https://twitter.com/laydgeur/status/1433463215321669633?lang...

I find it amusing how prudish the article is about its purpose, ie. support "U.S. Navy [ocean modeling] research objectives". that pretty much means submarine and acoustic warfare.

you overlook that those weapons were supplied at critical times, when the Soviet war machine had not ramped up yet. entire offensives were led with nearly only lend-lease kit.

Google Maps does feature particularly terrible [carto]graphic design... never understood why they got away so long with such poor feature colour, contrast, and placenames appearance logic.

Ariane 6, which suffers from some delays. Vega and Vega-C are also supposed to fill the lower segment gap, but they are grounded after a series of mishaps. Tough spot for ESA launchers, but we'll get through this!

Even the aviation and space world is victim of touchscreen frenzy. There was a lot of criticism when SpaceX adopted full-touchscreen control on their Dragon capsule. Try to get anything done on a touchscreen under quite heavy loads/bum

Depends on their route profile. It is a combination of flight hours and cycles (ie. take-offs + landings). There also are calendar limits to maintenance operations.

20 years is not very old by aviation standards. Also, MD-11s are arguably still very modern birds. It's not like cargo carriers were still operating 707s or 727s.

IMO it mostly boils down to good practices in symbology, projection, legend, scaling, etc. being better implemented and easy-to-use for the map maker. ggplot2 is an obvious heavy-weight, but other packages such as mapsf and tmap also

The mapmaking R ecosystem absolutely has been around for ages, and from a cartographer's point of view it is better suited at making actual maps than Python.

Protests were not necessarily loud but Afghanistan had a heavy impact on Soviet society. Read Zinc Boys, and on the Committees of Soldiers’ Mothers. > according to Western propaganda in Wikipedia Yeah, OK, I see.
