Right, and most of the consumption is being served from linux servers. So Microsoft is trying to use their strength on desktop and in production to stay relevant in that ecosystem, even though it involves other platforms than Windows - henc

Could you explain to me what you think an Extinguish step would look like in that sequence? Because I don't think there is a realistic one, and I don't think Microsoft thinks so either.

Look, I'm not saying saying we should "trust" Microsoft not to Embrace, Extend, Extinguish if they could - but they can't and they know it, so that's not their strategy. EEE was hinged entirely on the dominance of W

I've found this is easier after changing jobs a couple times. At some point you'll look back at what you did at your previous job, and most likely you'll barely remember exactly what it was or why it was considered important.

We're standing on the shoulders of giants - so many giants in fact, that it's quite possible to spend a lifetime just climbing upward these days. By comparison, in Leonardo's time, a curious mind would almost certainly have t

To play devil's advocate - games with this kind of production value require a huge investment in asset production, which means they tend to be very conservative when it comes to gameplay, because they want to be damn sure it doesn'

I don't know if you noticed that one of the use cases I mentioned was level artists. 9 times out of 10, a level artist isn't trying to optimize some specular highlight in a vase, they are trying to see if this room is lit in a goo

If nothing else the tech allows 3D artists and level designers to get instant feedback while they are tweaking a scene, without having to wait for a full render/lightmap bake - having iteration time go from minutes to seconds is a game

Does this work together with a build cache? My dream setup for dealing with building huge code bases is a file system integrated with the version control system to only download files when they are accessed (which sounds like what this does

One way to improve both frameworks and libraries (but is especially needed with frameworks) is if they create 'safety valves' - places where it's possible for the programmer to just break free of what the framework/libra

There's a world of difference between projecting onto a non-living entity the properties of an animal, or those of a human - so I don't understand why you think what I did was an anthropomorphism. And I find the analogy to animals

I think the notion of trusting any company over a certain size is crazy - I wish people would stop anthropomorphizing companies that way. Basically, I can trust specific people if I feel that I know their character, and by proxy I might tru
