It's not about absolute but about relative to the amount of energy produced. Energy return in investment is <10x for solar, but more like 100x for nuclear. We have an energy budget to solver climate change. This is nothing to do wit

There is a comment on this thread about this being like the railroads, but this is nothing like the railroads except insofar as it costs a lot of money. The railroads have lasted decades and will remain relevant for many more decades. They

I meant your second perspective. I'm in the Popper camp on your example. You may have good reasons as to why you say he's wrong, but isn't that the scientific method: showing things to be false. If it can't be shown to b

I've said this before in not the same words, and I am always downvoted here on hackernews: people need to understand theory of knowledge before they understand science. Physics and physicists are the worst offenders.

One of the biggest problems of a scientific education is the lack of hubris taught. Science has a very clear box it works remarkably well in, but it far too often strays outside of this box. We should have been told that science is about th

It works like our own minds in that we also think, test, go back, try again. This doesn't seem like a failing but just a recognition that thought can proceed in that way.

This would be a terrible idea for all sorts of reasons. I will start with a few questions. How would you determine the wage level of the govt? How would you differentiate pay at the govt? How would you prevent govt sector bloat and excessiv

This is not price gouging, but rather it's a price the market supports. The debt shouldn't make a difference to pricing unless debt free owners were reducing pricing below what they could charge (with the trade off being that you

The problem with 1) blaming early trauma on all outcomes and 2) saying it's out responsibility to support them, is that it sends a poor signal about personal responsibility. What kind of society would be created if we sent that message
