This was so annoying that I built a stand-alone clone of edit using VB for MSDOS. Unfortunately after compiling it was larger than QBASIC :(

Well no not really. It’s two data points. Let’s work out what is different and work out why yours sucks :) I run mine with default apps, couch to 5k, nutracheck, YouTube, eBay, Santander, OS maps, prime video, Netflix, slack, PayPal, Uber e

Yes. I can get a day and a half out of my XR easily with quite heavy usage. And the battery health is 90% after 18 months of ownership. Best phone I’ve ever had.

I can’t see anything I’d choose in this over an iPhone SE. The smaller size doesn’t sell it. I imagine it’d be an inconvenience.

Reboot is definitely the file locking. One of the worst architectural choices that they made. As for the time, I have no idea. A lot of it’s sitting there doing SFA looking at task manager.

Possibly in terms of feel. They really ran a pile of crap on a 486DX100 in comparison. The RISC OS machines of the early 1990s had a similar feel to a modern PC on the performance front with every-day tasks.

Thanks for this. Will read later. Wasn’t ARX basically Unix reimplemented in Modula2 ?

Yes Arthur was the hack job I was referring to :) My father was using a 286 by then. It was vastly inferior however he built some software with MS PDS (quickbasic) I think it was and made a lot of cash. Software in the blood.

A large amount of the crap that was sold to U.K. schools is still random bits of rancid flash. The same schools also bought crates of iPads galore on which none of the software works. It’s a mess.

Yeah same here on the primary computer front. It's certainly the best hassle vs results computing device I've ever owned.

Completely agree there. With respect to the earphones I think Apple etc should buy them back at a percentage of the original cost and have recycling targets that that are independently audited.

iOS (particularly iPadOS) seems to get this about right. Copy / paste / sharing seems to work very well for various work pipelines I use. I rarely if ever touch the filesystem.

I'm really not bothered by this. While I appreciate the right to repair, I don't think a lot of stuff is repairable with any reasonably easy to obtain equipment these days. It's limiting all repairs to FRU replacement. I can

I liked that but sometimes it was a pain in the butt. Particularly if you'd forgotten to open the destination directory window already and the save thing was down 3 levels of menus.

Yeah the A440 was not cheap. I didn't understand money as much as I do now back then. Equivalent inflation adjusted is about £6500 now (!). Which is why my parents had a heart attack when I just blew it instantly on that. Absolutely wo

Acorn were indeed way ahead of their time. Especially when it came to flunking software projects. They had the hardware done but the OS was a quick hack job because their proper OS (ARX) was late. So they ported MOS from the BBC series and

I think it was a positive feedback loop across several data driven political outfits that happened to saturate into an exit eventuality. I don’t think our politicians are even in control of it. They just naively do what keeps working for th

It deleted my freshly code signed MSI the other day as well. This is irritating but as mentioned a not unusual side effect. A good thing is they have sample submission that was fast and efficient.

I’m really on board with this. A few weeks back I was given a 1st gen iPad Pro and quite frankly it stank and the pencil was deceased but I saw the potential and the integration opportunities. So after futzing with one and working out the e

Perhaps the destination should define whether or not you can paste into it and the OS can provide that option instead. This looks like a violation of “tell, don’t ask”.

Best time for me in a while. Have focused on productivity, organisation and both mental and physical health over everything because I have the time now I’m not doing things I thought I should be doing but didn’t need to do. Achieved more in
