It’s all about creating a brand and selling it these days. I actually wrote the core of an ansible class tool in 200 lines of Perl 20 years ago. Perhaps I should have been bought by red hat by now :)

Interesting. Nice to know it wasn't just me. There was no one to talk to about it back then so you had to think on your toes. SQL Server was a crap load easier to back up reliably

It was ok pre-windows 2000. I had access 97 it on 9 workstations on NT with never a problem! Moment office 2000 and windows 2000 came out it went to hell. Moved to SQL Server then. I am not sure what changed. It was quite frankly the most p

Anyone got any news on Windows 7 seeing as it's still 25% market share approx according to statcounter?

Nah I’m good. Just watched a couple of people suffer unnecessarily for the sake of a life insurance contract. Figured it was worth checking out before I threw the cash into one. Thanks for the concern though :)

Also if you do manage to commit suicide no one pays out on life insurance or pension. Best option I think is to start with nothing and end with nothing. The above problem is void then. That fortunate bit in the middle needs to be distribute

There was a promise to make this magical and better apparently. I haven’t seen an improvement yet. Edit: to the downvotes, sorry for being disappointed in having windows Update ram a whole core at 100% and eat up my AWS CPU credits to do pr

That’s better for sure. Hand soldering stuff tends to be the worst outcome.

I am continually impressed that that number of breadboard connections actually works for a lot of people. I never had such luck even with 3M boards.

Yeah no worries. We’re all hyper critical. Need to outline the dangers because people who are unaware of the issues working with mains tend to be the first to drop dead. This is followed by the people who suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect.

Fuse would be good. Here in UK there’s one in the plug. The 10M resistor will current limit. Or probably flash over here. Isolation transformer is not required if the enclosure is better. It also doesn’t help you if you stick yourself acros

It’s a derivative of the original code. Much like the BSD derivatives of the original 4.4BSD source. I think there were some licensing issues originally.

Also if it touches NTFS you end up with MFT contention on small files which really knackers performance on WSL 1.

Brittle - try dealing with a hosed boot or DBus failure. I've dealt with numerous on CentOS 7 and at this point it's easier just to blow the whole node away and start again. Also I've had a couple of segfaults on journalctl r

It is functionally better but far more brittle, over complicated, heavily coupled, stateful and poorly managed. The net gain is close to zero. Somewhere between sysv and systemd was the sweet spot. Edit: I know my point is unpopular, perhap

Yes totally that. I have been told many times in the last 20 years that the only thing that gets used comes from Microsoft. Literally the same shops end up with several piles of unmaintained crap which is either "not invented here"

I see something missing in this thread. I suspect this is the audience which is highly technical and work focused. This is a hobby. Bar the license constraints, the scope is amazing. And you don't have to achieve anything major. You do

I think this attitude is wrong. This is a hobby. There are a few constraints on what you can do with it due to licensing and that's about it. Whatever happens is fine be it cranking CW out on a one tube transmitter on 80m, pushing the
