I was referring to the fact that Wolfram actually understood the input, not that it answered a trivial math question :)

Any statement that argues that X is stupid and arrogant, where X has a sizable population or market is flamebait, and that applies to PPK as well as "Michael Galpin".

Where else did you intern? I'm curious because I'd like to know whether an Amazon internship would be different or better than my other experiences (Microsoft/IBM).

I have almost no mobile app development experience, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems to me like the reason you wouldn't have to worry about an Android app wrecking havoc on your smartphone is because it runs in a JVM-ish sand

I like Joel's ideas as a long-term business strategy, but it seems like it would require a lot of initial capital and would be impossible to pitch to a VC. Unless you're made of money, those two drawbacks don't go together well. What's a so

I don't think the data indicates that at all. According to the graph, ~6% of women are considered very attractive (5) and receive ~18% of the messages. ~15% of the women are considered pretty attractive (4) and receive ~28% of the messages.

No. If reducing emissions is the goal, gas taxes are actually superior because the price is proportional the emissions you make. This tax doesn't provide a disincentive against gas guzzlers, but they already have insanely high gas taxes in

I'm a relatively new user too, but for me HN is one of the few refuges for rational discourse online, and the last thing I would want is for it to become another digital ghetto.

In the wake of my disillusionment with the way reddit has devolved, I've been thinking about this problem for a while. I think the best way to handle this is to apply a sort of social equivalent to the PageRank algorithm to users. Thus, whe

Maybe I've been away from Java for too long, but I understand why the + operator's implementation is so much slower than that of String.concat(). If concat() uses a StringBuilder, why doesn't the + operator as well?

Thank you! IMO, the smartest thing to do in life is to pursue the options that maximize happiness. Money has a weak causal relationship with happiness[1]. Consequently, those getting a Ph.D. in English, for example, should do so if that's w
