I immediately thought of this blog post by Nate Lawson: http://rdist.root.org/2008/07/03/dead-listing-while-on-vacat... Wherein he describes the process by which he prints out dis-assembly of a program and goes through it by hand while at

I can appreciate the author's plea against data being used as prescriptive recommendations for interface design, but I feel like her analogy to Le Corbusier is strained. I'll admit to having gone through a "Bauhaus" phase many years ago (a

I am more aggravated by the fact that when Reader installs an update, it re-adds an icon to my desktop. For the life of me, I can't think of a single reason why I would ever want to launch Reader by itself (and not by launching a PDF file).

A couple weeks back I tried to buy a single copy of PGP from Symantec's site (as other retail versions no longer exist), and it was an unmitigated disaster (you have to call their sales people, who try to get you to buy a site license). A b

I don't assume that I'm smarter than anybody. I also don't assume that people on here are just trying to be funny (recent influx of Reddit'isms aside), hence me trying to point out instances where Microsoft wouldn't be holding a Non-Compete

For starters, they can chose to enforce a non-compete agreement or not, they're not required to go after every ex-employee (it's not like upholding a trademark). Secondly, by all accounts Elop took the position with the full blessing of Mic

I hope in a few years to be able to launch startupboat. Snark aside, I used to work with a guy who lived on a boat in SF (for him it was cheaper than renting), and once a week or so, a bunch of us would actually work from the boat.

I would hope that this message was already crystal clear. Security through obscurity isn't a replacement for other strategies. That doesn't mean that it's useless; just that if people are relying solely on it, then you can pretty much bet t

I don't mean to shatter your dream of how security firms are run, but on the whole, I'd bet we're no better than the industry at large. This might be a "cobbler's kids shoes" issue, or just a general failure of people and process. One of th

You won't likely find such a party in cases like this. What is more likely is that each side will hire a forensics firm to image the drive, and as long as both their checksums match, than there isn't much disagreement.

Sony won't be involved directly with any part of the forensics. Their attorneys will contract with a forensics firm who will make an image of the drives (using a write-blocked device like the ones made by Wiebetech or an Encase Fastbloc). A

I don't have any data to back up my theory (so by all means take it as an uninformed opinion), but I think that was probably more true in the past. I'm pretty sure that nowadays, counter to what might seem logical, there is a direct correla
