I really, really hope that this traction on Hacker News will make Microsoft fix this for good. Anything that gains such traction gets fixed eventually, but I want them to fix the root cause, not just this instance of it.

When I hear Ohio and trains I immediately think of the huge federal grants for building a higher speed rail line from Cleveland over Columbus to Cincinnati that were already granted. The same was granted for Wisconsin and Florida. And one b

What a refreshing read. By using the familiar “explaining jokes is human” trope, you completely debunked ChatGPT’s “human-like” capabilities! I expected it would have fared much better (like it does on other topics and situations) but this

Wow, so interaction with the real world makes an AI into what we think of when we think AI. And because our strongest AIs are based on text, the terminal is the way to wake up such an AI. This is brilliant and the first actually dangerous u

Wow, Ueli Maurer. That was a deeply nostalgic name to show up in this article. I took the mandatory first-year Discrete Math course from him, and I would say that it was the tastiest math class I’ve ever taken in my life. His script for the

Another badly designed Nintendo console. Now hear me out: NES: Well designed. SNES: Well designed. N64: Hampered by the originally 12-24 MB cartridges as opposed to 650 MB CDs. GameCube: Well designed. A little hampered by the 1.4 GB mini D

The main reason why Apple phones do well on the used market is probably the absurdly powerful CPUs in them. An iPhone XS (from 2018) has the single-core performance of the most expensive 1000$+ non-Apple phone you can find. iPhone 11 (from

It’s called the Flynn effect and reverse Flynn effect. From the 90s on, test scores are falling, even if this specific data doesn’t show it. I agree that what is seen here in this short-term data is the lockdown effect. Study: https:/

You might not believe me, but the decline of the insect population (also on the frontpage) and the fall of test scores and the fall of sperm quality since the 90s have the same single origin. And nothing is being done about it.

I’ve noticed the same with snails. When I was a child in the 90s, the sidewalks were full of snails, and during a 10 minute stroll, I’d often find tens of small snails. Today I find 1 or 2 snails after rainfall, if at all.

Why do you think it’s gaining market share? Because more of ARM is deployed than non-ARM. I couldn’t find the direct source any more, but I remember that in the year 2020 AWS deployed more ARM than non-ARM, and today it is at around 80% ARM
