Your comment made me think about what is the principal point of evolution: New ideas/species/functions are not born from competition, they are formed by mixing up.

Why are all the other comments so negative and stuck up whether it constituted “cheating” or not? That wasn’t the point of this story. It was a beautifully well written account on luck and how sometimes the things align. The interviewee at

So what happened is the following: When JEDEC was standardizing DDR5 they mandated on-die ECC which checks for errors that happen while the data rests on RAM. This was done to increase reliability because of high memory density. This is goo

Does any brand at all sell ECC UDIMM DDR5 modules? I want to use it for an Alder Lake workstation, but can’t seem to find any except for Dell OEM memory. Is there none on the “open” market?

Big big nope. Argentina is in hyperinflation mode for over 30 years. It didn’t implode. Economists don’t know everything. Their analyses are too mechanical.

Funny thing is Türkiye is a French exonym for Turkey (la Turquie). It is not even a Turkish word or a word coined in Turkey. The suffix -iye, however, is also a suffix that is used in Turkish coined words of Persian and Arabic compounds whe

I want to share Bob Cringely’s (yes, that Bob Cringely) article on this topic. It explains everything very concisely in very simple terms. https://www.cringely.com/2018/02/26/win-lose-wall-street-scr...

No, it’s an abbreviation of Tokyo. Even if To means East - in a compound To often stands for Tokyo. Same concept in these words: 来日 - Nichi means day, here it stands for Japan. Here’s an article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org

Some people care only about maximum absolute performance, others care for performance per Watt. I find the latter much more sensible. What performance Apple can reach in, say, 50W, Intel reaches in 150W. I have a list of instructions per cl

There is a massive design gap between all Apple designed chips and non Apple designed chips. Apple’s chips are ridiculously humongous. They’re built for extremely wide, high performance applications for the past 10 years. A single A14 core

In my analysis, only Gracemont (Atom 5th gen) is good and that’s for two reasons: 1. It has roughly the IPC of Skylake. 2. It’s the first Atom with AVX2. Even in 2021 Intel released brand new Atom cores without AVX2, which was introduced wi

If anyone just cares for speed instead of compression I’d recommend lz4 [1]. I only recently started using it. Its speed is almost comparable to memcpy. [1] https://github.com/lz4/lz4

HEVC is in principle the same as VP9. AV1 is one generation newer. It was made by merging the projects for VP10, Thor, and Daala. AV1 is computationally better than HEVC/VP9 and more comparable to H.264. Visually it’s better than eithe

But is the psychovisual output any good or do they only target, say, speed? Because back in the days, both Videolan projects x264 and x265 (especially x264) had much better psychovisual quality than commercial encoders. Back in those days,

Some years ago when H.264 was new and uncommon, I thought about archiving tapes in XviD so I could share more easily with friends and family. I tested it and found that the quality vs x264 was much too bad. I begrudgingly went ahead with us

Isn’t the takeaway message from this: just don’t buy the cheapest and worst product? It will always give you a bad experience. When filtering for products the cheapest one and most expensive one should not even be considered.
