Lately as soon as I see Apache, I think last-gen. After playing with nginx with such great results (and loving the easy of configuration!) I'm thinking a more forward-looking approach would be to build a solid FastCGI implementation which c

What gets me aren't devices that may have phyisical limitations or regulations to overcome (e.g., Kindle net access is bound to a US provider, hence not available here), but the purely online services that there's no reason we can't access

Exactly. The others aren't even trying to expand to outside of the US, as far as any outsider can tell. It's frustrating to no end being a startup outside the US and having to rely on Paypal or a very slim selection of even crummier merchan

What about merchant account vs the premium services like Paypal Website Payments Pro? Their fees are reasonable and the API looks like it accounts for the flexibility issues you would ordinarily go to a full merchant account for. I'm curren

A couple services that come to mind: http://spreedly.com/ http://zuora.com/ Zuora is mucho $$$ though, and Spreedly has a ways to go before it's a full-featured solution. Their current focus I believe is on being solid with regards to o

I agree with rscott on the appearance for users, but one thing to be careful of with services like Adsense is your click-through ratio (CTR). If your hits on a big launch day skyrocket, but the traffic isn't the ad-clicking type, you could

An API would be rad. I've used HTMLDoc ( http://www.htmldoc.org/ ) by sending URLs to the command line for projects before, but they don't render the same and require special instructions inserted into the HTML for some formatting options.

Awesome! I was hoping for this for some time. Lighthouse user right now, but putting the two together just makes sense. I setup a new repository last night and saw an option for "issues" in the settings, so I'm not so surprised but definite

Haha, I misread your sentence "...more than just space as a benefit of referring..." For sure, credits would be very welcome too, although permanent extra space is decent as well. I'm at 60% of my 50GB, so I'm already getting to be a bit sp

They do offer extra space for referrals actually (0.5GB/referral up to 6GB free on top of the 2GB free or pro plan). I had already referred a bunch of people so I emailed them and they quickly credited my account! Try sending them a nice me

Funny, Zuora quoted us 2% with a $1,000/month minimum fee. Not realistic for a startup until you're already pretty well established IMO...

For personal or non-critical sites, Dreamhost are great. Their reputation stems from the fact that they publish their issues openly on a blog with comments enabled and zero moderation (dreamhoststatus.com). So the kicking and screaming that

Not surprised, but very disappointed that this is still US-only (once it launches beyond existing Grand Central users).

In my case, I'm not too worried about Slicehost imploding anytime soon since they were just acquired by Rackspace not long ago. As for going rogue, that's been a concern of many as a result of the acquisition (will they suddenly up the pric

Most public services ought to have them. Not just APIs, but even simple stuff like an RSS or ical export for garbage/recycling days so I can throw it in my calendar. It's about usable data formats too. Great question, by the way :)

The integration really just happens in your script, it's very basic. When I receive a RecordingUrl parameter from Twilio, I just save the file (I'm using PHP, so file_get_contents() to get the file, and file_put_contents() to save it) then

I've started using twilio.com for a new site. They offer a toll-free 866 number for $5/mo + $0.05/min. Now it's not a phone line or voicemail per se, but rather a service for programming phone features like an answering service, support tic

Hmmm, googling mentions something about new developer tools built-in, as well as an IE7 rendering mode. Waiting for the download to see for myself. This sounds promising!

I don't want to fire up VMWare to install IE8 since it's been slow on me lately, but have they done anything to improve debugging or do we still need visual studio or another external app for that? And can you install this alongside IE7 or

I make a CMS and sell it for a living (we also have an open source version). I'll be the first to say we're nowhere near 100% there, and won't be for a long time. CMS is a bit vague because it encompasses so many areas that overlap, so one

I wrote my own CMS/framework which I started about 8-9 years ago, so I use that. In my main business I sell a "pro" version of it as well as customization/hosting/etc, and naturally it's also the framework I use for my startup too. For thos

Twilio will succeed simply because they've reduced it to being ridiculously easy. I mean, a complete non-coder could practically put together a working app based on Twilio, which I doubt is the case with any VoiceXML provider. I personally

I've actually been working on training myself to use one space, and it's a hard habit to change. I was taught to use two spaces by typing teachers, but was recently given a bit of a lesson from a friend who studies typography and designs hi
