My impression is that, at least partly, it's a result of the trim wheel being connected through a very long mechanical linkage to the tail, while the motor is right there. The pilots also don't have great mechanical leverage to tu

This isn't true though, it seems perfectly possible to certificate transport-category airplanes with sketchy stall characteristics, since T-tail planes can end up in unrecoverable situations by blanketing the tail in a stall. Twin-engi

The engines on the MAX are forward of the CoG, so they are pushing the nose up as you add thrust - exactly what you do not want when approach a stall. MCAS has been added to help with this - to help the crew push the nose down in such situ

It's my impression that lifetime is mostly efficiency degradation from UV exposure. If that's true, then it seems that if you have fewer solar hours per day, the panel will just retain its efficiency longer until eventually you re

I'm thinking of something like http://www.absolicon.com/ , concentrating collectors for industrial process heat. Maybe the intermittency is a factor though, you'd need a thermal storage to go along with it.

Sure, the energy density is a bit lower, but that's not really what people mean when they talk about "performance". "High-performance cars" don't usually refer to cars that can go a long distance on a tank.

This is a cool project! One question though: why is getting rid of thermal processes an improvement? If you're getting electricity from solar, you can get even more thermal energy from solar since the conversion efficiency for capturin

Why do you say ethanol degrades performance? Ethanol is an anti-knocking agent when added to gasoline, so it actually enables higher performance.

The average price of cars might have risen, but have the average price of a given car segment (size, trim level) really risen? I have the feeling that people are just buying bigger (unnecessarily bigger) cars, and the high trim levels are a

The purpose of Tesla is to save the world from global warming, though. I'm not sure self-driving is that relevant compared to the electric propulsion part.

That's not really relevant though because people don't stare at a fixed point, they trade time for resolution over a larger area.

I think FH acceleration off the pad is slightly higher than F9. Makes sense since there's 3x as much liftoff thrust but generally the liftoff mass is not 3x that of a F9.
