I feel for you (had a computer broken by UPS when moving many years ago). I just have things shipped to my work address if I care about the item [esp. things like electronics, which can be damaged when the delivery guy throws^Wdelivers :) t

I wasn't able to figure out how to remove the top and bottom panels (the window list thing at the bottom and the shutdown button thing on top). I like vertical real estate (would like to merge them into one, like I could with Ubuntu 10.10).

Ok, I got downvotes instead of clarifications to my question about the market share of the govt. in student loans. :( It appears that the direct and indirect (i.e., backed by the govt.) loans by the federal govt. account for 80% of the mark

But I wouldn't use the word 'subsidy' to describe that situation.

Who is the "they" here? Unless the govt. is doing it, it doesn't count as subsidy. Also, I thought govt. loans were much smaller in total than private loans. Is that incorrect?

In what ways is a college loan a subsidy? ("by subsidizing investment in college education" ...) Who's doing the subsidizing? Am I missing something?

Practical use of the STL can be learned in an afternoon. Just focus on the Big Four: string, map, vector, and unordered_map (last one is in in c++11 only). The venerable original SGI document should take you quite a ways: http://www.sgi.co

Almost every Firefox thread has a comment like this. I'm no Firefox expert, but I use it a lot. The most common question asked in response is: What extensions are you running? Can you disable some of them. I run ABP, Ghostery, HTTPS

Umm, I was supporting your phrasing. :) i.e., that most people get that you will work extra hours when truly required. And that even a supposedly more precise phrasing suffers from the problem that the listener may not interpret the words t

How is this more precise? You said "rare", and the other party heard "rare", but guys never agreed on what "very rare" was. Believe me, people can have very different ideas about what "very rare" means in this context. :)

See the subject line of the article. Are you prepared to pay people one way or other (extra vacation days, on-the-spot cash bonus to take family out to a fancy dinner) for stepping up? No? Why not?

His point was about requiring a login on another social network to vote on a video, when you're already logged in to Youtube. You somehow boiled it down to a discussion on the lack of a "thumbs down" button. I think you're off track here.

Atlassian keeps it at $10 for 1-5 users. Awesome! And they give the source code to commercial and academic customers for customization. Transparent pricing. They may be the least enterprisey of the enterprise vendors. :)
