I just went from the open source Nouveau drivers to the closed source one a few days ago. My CPU was literally running hotter from the radiated heat from the GPU due to the driver not doing something right. Things seem to be cooler with the

Thanks a lot! This is the most useful thing I've read in this thread. I own two green drives. I installed two Caviar Black (b/c of the 5-yr warranty) drives in a RAID array a few months ago. The RAID edition drives aren't even significantly

Interesting. Can you please point me to a more authoritative source for this? I also had a "green" drive fail surprisingly soon. How did you confirm that they spin up and down "several times a minute" by themselves. Are you sure it wasn't y

Saw a build on a post in the the hackintosh sub-reddit, the link to which was posted here on HN. Great site. Since you're here, I'm going to file a bug. :) I just noticed that the following motherboard isn't showing an amazon price for me:

You can never have enough processing power when you're editing and re-rendering videos. Hell, I find lightroom able to use all the CPU I can throw at it when I muck around with ~400 photos that I shoot in a day. I have no doubt that video w

The rationalwiki article linked above links to that article and several others. So IMHO your charge of "name smeared in a vague way" is incorrect.

AFAIK, Netflix doesn't use Amazon for delivering streams to their customer (they use Level3's CDN). They use Amazon for batch jobs like transcoding and to host their API servers. Using Amazon for API servers is a little surprising, btw. I w

Are you sure? When a lens claims to be f/2.8 at all zoom levels, it usually means that that the maximum aperture (i.e., minimum f-number) is f/2.8. It can do f/11 etc also. If it is indeed a lens with just a single aperture setting, can y

People who know better can answer this more authoritatively. My two cents are: 1. Stocks are never priced "appropriately" in the US. Companies rarely adopt the Google-style book-building process (kinda like an auction). 2. FB like others wa
