I just had a look at the first video in the first course on YouTube [0] and was delighted to see Herb Gross responding in the comments. Clearly this is a man who loves his subject and loves introducing it to others. [0] https://w

Exactly what I was going to suggest. If you're just going to mess around to see what it's like developing running Linux, save the $300 and do it in a virtual machine to start with. Then if you like it you can buy some hardware.

This was mentioned here a couple weeks ago. I watched it and his previous film, Bitter Lake, in quick succession. Both were really interesting and well worth the time.

I don't mean to be that person, but it's Timothy Gowers, not James.

I enjoy a mathematics textbook as much as the next person, but what annoys me is the lack of solutions to the problems in so many of the books I've skimmed outside of classes.

I worked through a couple chapters of SICP using Racket and the SICP package in DrRacket before moving on to Emacs and Geiser. DrRacket is a great starting point if you don't want to bother with setting up Emacs and the SICP package ev

Did you use something before Bokeh that you preferred, or is your comment based on Bokeh being generally better than Matplotlib?

Perhaps universities have overlooked a simple solution to illiterate students: don't admit them! But of course, that won't look good on the bottom line, so in they come.

I love the magazine scans. They're almost always a good reminder of how much things have changed, and how cheap things have become.

Out of curiosity I searched for the Wall Street Journal subscription page. I selected my country (UK) and then clicked on the subscription offer. I was then taken to a Hong Kong page with no obvious way of changing it back to the UK. If the

Since the content is way, way above my head, I'll only comment by saying that I find it quite annoying how many academic papers don't have a date on the front page. It's a small thing, but can help to establish context.

This is my favourite book about writing. It's not only filled with insight but itself serves as a perfect example of what the author is recommending you do.

People shouldn't have a supply for use when they feel like it. Antibiotics are a last resort, not first! If someone has some left over then they did not finish the previous course, which means that they have potentially allowed the str

At the individual level, I've always thought of antibiotic misuse as (at least in some part) a symptom of our resistance to authority. People end their antibiotic course early (and then usually use the remaining pills another time) bec

There are two small things you can do: 1. Always finish your course of antibiotics. Even if you're feeling better. The course is as long as it is for a reason. 2. If for some reason you choose not to do (1) above, do not ever give some

"A spokeswoman for the Education Department said that the problem resulted from a technical programming error." I would love to get the story behind this. The cynic in me wants to say it was an Excel screw-up.
