Ah, wow, a blast from the past! I wrote RFC2307 and {nss,pam}_ldap (which, to be fair, weren't the most robust bits of code, but I was a pretty green C programmer back then).

When the last ObjC framework is gone? Surely that’s decades away. There are zillions of frameworks in PrivateFrameworks, many written in ObjC. The Swift/C++ bridging stuff is pretty exciting though. A lot of engineering is being thrown

Apple gave me a G4 once when I was contributing to Darwin but, that was a long time ago and the culture may have changed. However I suspect if you had an existing relationship with an engineer there, they'd throw some surplus hardware

Around 2006-7 we added an Active Directory personality to NDS, called Domain Services for Windows. It was an interesting piece of engineering that highlighted both the similarities and differences between the two technologies. (Note that it

NetInfo did have some good ideas, and I suppose it could have been improved, but the market wanted a standards-based solution. I think macOS was the first commercial operating system to ship with a RFC2307 LDAP client. Jaguar (10.2) had a N

Good on you! I did something similar (tech to music), the irony is now I am drawn to programming as a hobby as there are some bits of the brain music just doesn’t exercise. On the whole a happier person.

Actually, the Windows LSA architecture - where both verification of initial credentials (PAM) as well as network authentication (GSS) are remoted via IPC to a daemon - has a lot of nice properties. I believe sssd does something similar on R
