Also, not using Apple's libobjc misses out on years of optimisation. e.g. compare the implementations of objc_sync_enter() (not that @synchronized is necessarily that common). Couldn't find their implementation of objc_msgSend, in

sysctlbyname() implementation in Frameworks/CoreFoundation/CFMisc.mm does not check the destination buffer size.

I'm surprised they didn't use Apple's libobjc nor CoreFoundation; a quick look at the Foundation/CoreFoundation code suggests it's nowhere near as complete as Apportable's. The rest looks impressive though and

My limited understanding is that LLVM bitcode doesn't insulate you completely from the ABI/platform differences, e.g. between 32- and 64-bit. So I wonder if they'll be "fat" binaries. Coincidentally, there's be

It's not all of CF and some of the ObjC glue is missing, particularly in the last few drops. Apportable put most of if back in though.

It's always just a SMOP, but my hunch is that Swift is way too integrated with the Apple runtime to not use it. I wouldn't be surprised if they have limited support for ObjC in their Swift Linux port, but happy to be proven wrong.

Be interesting to see if they support @objc on Linux, the Apple runtime is difficult to support because it requires the dynamic linker to notify libobjc when an image is loaded.

Maybe MS will do it given they're porting ObjC.

In 1996 I ported a large bunch of code from NEXTSTEP to Windows using the GNU runtime. That was all pre-OpenStep (OK, it wasn't, but the code didn't use Foundation, had no UI, etc, so it didn't depend on any class libraries b

Squinting at the debugger screenshots, instance variables that are private in the 2.0 runtime are visible (e.g. instance_size). I wonder if they used the Apple runtime...

And it's possible Apple will open source it - although if they do I imagine it will be more work to integrate with a foreign runtime (if indeed that is what MS has done) than to use Apple's own.

They don't have a good reputation, do they. But, it depends on how much engineering resource Microsoft dedicate (and of course, how quickly Apple evolve their APIs/applications make use of them).

Indeed. Tell any ex-NeXT person circa 1996 that MS would be effectively building their own OPENSTEP for Windows and no one would have believed you. Will be interesting see how they implemented it and whether they used Apportable's Foun

Interesting. Yes, I really admire Ableton as a company and as a product. Unfortunately for the music I make, Pro Tools makes more sense (of course, I'm sure if I switched I would survive!).

I suspect if Apple wants Swift to target other platforms they'll use their own compiler.

This looks interesting, although adding language extensions makes me a bit nervous. What's the ABI compatibility story when targeting Cocoa? Can I mix and match with native Swift classes? Is the native Swift runtime used?

Heh, I remember this too. For a brief time in the late 90s I was responsible for porting NeXT's NetInfo to a bunch of different Unixes. I think, though, we mainly used gcc except on SunOS, because it was free and handled modern C synta
