OpenAFS used to do this if I remember right. They moved to an IFS.

Indeed, the good old days. I has a slab for a while in 95 (actually, I still have it), it was pretty slow though for development. Running on HPPA was much better. Many fond memories.

I did it, more or less. I had a software company, now I am a full time musician.

I've tried them out (one of the founders is a friend, and my music is in the clip) – they sound great. The hearing profiling is pretty amazing from an engineering/audiology perspective.

Last time I checked it also uses a lot of RPC protocols, e.g. NSPI.

Well, we had Persona working as both as GSS-API mechanism on Unix and a SSP on Windows. You could use it to sign-in to Exchange with Outlook - that was pretty cool. Links here: * https://hacks.mozilla.org/2013/04/m

I really liked Persona and put a bunch of work into extending it (adding support for things like selective attribute disclosure). One real design limitation was that it didn't support delegation (the original use case for OAuth).

Not the most serious issue but, how come they're encoding these constants as ASCII strings?

Ugh. And calling strcpy() with user-supplied data inside a SSP of all places... :-(

SChannel implements SSL/TLS as a security support provider (SSP), native crypto interfaces are WinCNG (current) or CryptoAPI (legacy). A port of OpenSSH that used the native crypto library would likely use WinCNG. An OpenSSL-like wrapp

Schannel implements SSL; crypto is in WinCNG these days. SSPI support for Kerberos and EAP would be nice.

Actually, MS did have something called the "Windows NT Add-On Subsystem for Presentation Manager" that permitted one to run 16-bit OS/2 GUI applications.

Persona was great and it's a bit sad to see it dead after investing a lot of time in it but - one big architectural problem was there was no way to support delegation (the problem OAuth was originally designed to solve).

Interesting article. CORBA is still hanging around in Avid's EuCon protocol for controlling audio applications. Not always that reliable (but hard to say where the blame lies there).

Very well said. Music is... hard. (I guess all careers in the arts are.) I too have worked both as a musician and a programmer, although I decided to go back to music after almost burning myself out writing code in my 20s. (Music is what I

IANAL but looking at ThirdPartyNotices.txt there is MPL code, so they're probably OK with APSL. Maybe not so with LGPL though (which would rule out Apportable's otherwise excellent Foundation implementation). It's also kind o

They should just use the Apple ObjC runtime, not that it's the cleanest piece of code, but... a lot of work has gone into it. Ditto for CoreFoundation. Oh well.

Ack. I recall Apportable did something similar in their first cut, then redid it with the correct architecture. (I wouldn't say Foundation is on top of UIKit in Microsoft's implementation though?) I am surprised they didn't u
