The macOS kernel has lots of BSD bits in it [1], it's not a classic microkernel in that sense. [1] https://github.com/apple/darwin-xnu/tree/master/bsd

And worth it to step inside Alan Turing’s office (to be clear, that’s in a nearby but separate museum at Bletchley Park).

Thank you for this tip: I saw your comment this morning and went today (am visiting London). Great stuff. Not as much vintage “modern” computing as the Computer History Museum in Mountain View but lots of amazing things, and of course lots

Which they did, based on DrawBridge. It’s pretty interesting, basically it’s the NT kernel as a library OS which hosts native PE binaries. There are some white papers around.

Agreed. Felt the same way listening to some AI-generated classical music, too.

Around 1995 I built some configuration management software based on M4, because I thought it was cool! Actually, it didn't do much in the way of management, but it did allow the ISP I was working for at the time to provision a customer

GCD is. NSOperationQueue is too tightly coupled to Foundation to be useful/relevant on other platforms.

I think OPENSTEP for Mach 4.0, the version with the new UI that never shipped post-beta, may have been based on 4.4BSD. It wasn’t until Rhapsody that this was dusted off with bits pulled in from FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD (you can see this

And Rhapsody (Mac OS X Server 1.0) shipped a developer preview on Intel, including UI (this was pre-Aqua and Mach 3.0, but otherwise a lot of similarities to MacOS X 10.0).

From memory, they did swap out Mach from the version 2.5 used in NS/OS for version 3 from MkLinux (which was from OSF). This was at the time of the Rhapsody to OS X transition. My memory is hazy on the BSD kernel mode component history

On OS X, open/save panels run in a different process via ViewBridge, at least they did last time I checked.

ATCs are great: they make you work hard (indeed, many classic records don't sound that crash hot on them). If it sounds good on them, though, it'll often translate really well.

Right, but the BSD components got a big makeover post-NeXT, largely thanks to FreeBSD (but also NetBSD and OpenBSD).

Amusingly enough, the audio data packing in AVB/TSN comes from FireWire via IEC 61883-6. AVB seems to be on its way to irrelevance in the pro audio/video world in favor of AES67/SMPTE 2110, which are Layer 3. Requiring switch
