I'm not sure if SQLite writes over NFS work, I wouldn't trust it. Previously I have done SQLite replication by simply rsyncing the database to application servers at certain times.

If you use autoconf, why not use also automake?

I'd say that most people should not write makefiles by hand. You should use some higher level build system, that knows how to deal with source files in your language, track their dependencies, etc. A "hello world" makefile w

A part of the story is that each company has the name "Arduino" trademarked in some countries.

At least for me, Arduino is not even about the hardware itself. It's about a nice, simple and standard platform. You can get many different Arduino compatible boards from different manufacturers, usable for different purposes. You can

Using files as an API is one of the most generic interfaces you can get. You can use it from any system/language you can imagine, assuming it can write to a file.

Well, it's not back in the original form, but you can attach binaries to releases. But in any case, this was the trigger for me to not trust GitHub. https://github.com/blog/1547-release-your-software

I migrated all my projects to Bitbucket when GitHub decided they do not want to host release downloads (they reversed the decision after that). I also use other Atlassian products and I trust the company to maintain the product, much more t

There is also one other disadvantage of being a solo junior dev - you will often work on very simple things. Complex systems usually require more than one person, and even if you are working as a junior dev who is just assigned tasks, you g

I think the best way to learn to be a better programmer in your position is to find a more stable job with a good team of people. Learn from other people's experiences and mistakes. Working as a freelancer early doesn't have many

The most important realization I had this year is that the biggest problem in software development (from the tech perspective) is not about programming, but about getting people to talk and cooperate. I don't think you can successfully

I think the limitations are not main reason why these 8-bit computers produced many good programmers. It's the fact that they booted straight to BASIC. In many cases, that was all you had. That invited people to start experimenting. My

I have not done any research, but this does not match my experience in tech companies. Some of the best programmers I have worked with were left-handed and were definitely making more than the average at the company. There also seems to be

I don't hate puzzles, but my brain just refuses to work on something that is not important to me. That's why I can't play go/chess well, I can't do sudoku and I can't solve algorithmic puzzles. Even when workin

I think this very much depends on your own attitude. Sure, there are assholes who will say things about how useless is your project and how they hate you for it, but this is not the norm in open source. And it's definitely not the norm

Audio fingerprinting as used by MusicBrainz is a little different concept. Because it doesn't have the need to match short phone-recorded samples, we can use more efficient algorithms for both the fingerprinting and their matching. It&
