I use people zoning out as a sign that the topic is not a good fit for this meeting, and should be discussed outside of it with a smaller group. That seems to work well to keep meetings quick and on point.

I'm not sure it's entirely entertainment vs. information. Books are my primary form of entertainment too, and I do like a good story. I can see how the artform of the written word could be part of it, as I'm generally unappre

I read a lot of books, and let me tell you: there's quite a few that should've had an editor telling the author exactly that. On the other hand there are books that just have a lot to tell. That's fine. Take the words you nee

But in those cases you are creating for other people. The point was made about software that didn't have any use for any people. In those cases, only the creation itself has a use, not the end result. By definition.

Well, you could create software as art. Basically to create it for the fun of creating it, not to use it. But yeah, the end result is useless then, and can be thrown out.

Presumably a 1x programmer is an average programmer. The type who does his job acceptably. He doesn't create huge problems, nor solve them. He is a fine team player and team member, but not a leader. Nobody despairs when he leaves, and

Most decisions don't require that much thought. They're low stakes and can easily be changed. To build on the professor's metaphor: don't spend a week in the library in it'll only save you a day. If it's a bit

That sounds like a beautiful example of letting perfect be the enemy of good. Just like your design choices have trade-offs, is it important to realize that there's a trade-off between finishing sooner and making a better solution. Dim
