Why can't you spin up a new instance of the monolith and designate it as the "queue worker"? I've done this before with both Laravel and Rails and it worked well enough while keeping things simple.

Many, many, many smaller cities and communities only exist as a byproduct of resource extraction. Taking that away means folks lose their jobs, families are broken up, and a way of life is lost. I had to leave mine to get a job in tech, and

I haven't done front end work for about one year. Looks like I'll be re-learning everything at some point, because this looks like a fairly major change. I'd strongly prefer backwards compatibility over a breaking change.

I've done it before. The job wasn't at all what I expected, and I didn't see myself growing the way I wanted while there. It sucked to do as it was a very small team and a non profit, but it was the right choice for myself. I

I'm one of those Node devs who've mostly worked for companies who have never made a profit, and I've recently been exploring Go, Java and C# (.NET Core) given I'm starting to work on more "serious" (or difficul

As someone on a dev team with little experience with microservices, including myself initially, you're going to make a big mess before you know how to clean it up. Take eventual consistency seriously. Limit rpc across services as much

Makes sense why Apollo is such a clusterfuck then. Have you looked at Nest for Node on the server side? I'm using it for a client project right now and find it the best offering for server side javascript. The ecosystem _is_ still imma

How would you approach a situation where a client updates a record in service A, and then navigates to a page whose data is returned by service B, which has a denormalized copy of service A's records that hasn't consumed and proce

How do you handle cases where your client is awaiting a response with a decoupled pub/sub backend? E.g a user creates an account and the client needs to know their user id. Would that user object be the responsibility of one service, o

I've realized I can still have a great career, make a very respectable wage, and work on interesting, novel problems all without working for a FAANG. Moreover, I don't have to directly contribute to the proliferation of corporate

This is my experience as well. Sometimes the conventions are frustrating, and particular to Rails I still don't know how to handle the front end well aside from jQuery (how are you doing it? Stimulus + Turbolinks, or...?), but is it ev

I went from MVC style all-in-one frameworks (Rails, Laravel) to application APIs fronted by single page applications and hope the developer mindshare tilts back to MVC frameworks. Something that'd take me an hour or two in Rails can ta

Execution speed of your server code is critically important in today's atmosphere. It's a lot easier to scale an application than the database behind it (e.g, spin up a few more VMS/containers vs. partitioning your db - one i

I've tinkered with Clojure and find it a really refreshing paradigm to work in for building web services. However, I'm not sure I'd ever use it for something serious - it's a hard sell to management, and it's diffic
