> Could irc not modernize? This is the point and the problem. It could but it hasn't. People have been waiting for it to modernize for 20 or 30 years. It took almost 30 years to add a feature people were demanding 20 years ago. Sl

That depends on your definition of purpose. If the purpose is to be niche tech, then yeah, sure, you're right.

That's nice as an optional feature but as a baseline it just seems like sentimental skeumorphism/metaphorism. Chat being real-time is certainly "approaching real life" much moreso than fully asynchronous email, but most

The IRC3 chathistory extension is less than 5 years old and still an unstable "work in progress" spec. Absolutely fantastic that it was finally added but IRC is 34 years old, and this has been an essential feature of chat services

Given studies associating positive health outcomes with 2-4 cups a day (no idea what defines a cup), would the implied extrapolation here be that a small amount of caffeine during sleep is helpful (holistically)?

It wasn't just about the alcohol content, in the case of beer for example it was also about the brewing process involving sterilisation before that was widely being done to water, as well as the antiseptic properties of hops.

This is a spec. Multi-level security is a high-level concept - and not one that has much technical definition - the Wikipedia article (while problematic / vague) even includes some thoughts on semantic overload. As someone who works in

These are all noble goals, and I don't think many commenters here are arguing that they're not justified. Just that the specific use of the term "open source" is incorrectly applied (to your own benefit). If a subset of

Open source is not the same as free software. There are broadly two camps: Camp 1 who advocate for free software & free software alone, and Camp 2 who advocate for "open source" being an all-encompassing umbrella term for a fe

There's 2 pretty reasonable reasons for this: 1. MDN's quality is higher, and it's more comprehensive when it comes to new browser specifications , but it's much less comprehensive in general technology/programming
