Uptime aside, you also have to consider the effect of a single point of failure when you self-host. If your in-house communication hub goes down when your site does, it's going to make firefighting that much worse and you'll pay f

Putting aside the peril of comparing intellectual property to physical property, this is not true, even in the United States where property rights are quite strong. For instance, there are squatters rights laws on the books in many states.

Not sure what an "ass comparison" is. I didn't argue that there isn't a correlation (never used that word) but correlation != causation. In case it's not clear, I really doubt that Twitter being an also ran has to d

What do Bitcoin and Ethereum have to do with escaping capitalism? Capitalism is an economic system oriented around private ownership[0]. If anything, they epitomize the libertarian/capitalist ideal by providing an alternative to fiat c

Wut. Time off does not correlate to dev quality. I, and many others, do their best work outside of the normal parameters. It sounds like you think if Twitter engineers worked harder Twitter would be doing better. Besides your anecdotal obse

If you're hitting a single box, this seems perfectly possible - especially if the server or the network is poorly configured. This is what CDNs are for.

I know Python far better than Ruby, but it looks like the semantics are equivalent, it's just that Ruby's standard `open` implementation includes the cleanup rather than leaving it up to the caller as in Python.

It's pretty common for noobs to do this when they have messed up permissions, because permissions errors magically go away. The OP on the Gentoo thread seems more than competent enough to know how to fix permissions issues though, so I

I totally agree with the broader point. I recently traveled to China for the first time, and was amazed by how far out of line my preconceived notions were. I think it's a mental block that keeps the West from learning from Chinese inn

Liberal? Have you read Breitbart? Bannon has ideas about class and economy that support egalitarianism - if you're a Christian, support old-school western cultural values, and are white. Apart from a few populist notions I don't t
