It's worthwhile noting that murder and rape significantly degrade quality of life, especially at a 0.1% per year. As a 25 year old guy, you might think it's a cheap place, but try convincing a gf or a parent to visit you.

Here's 10 minutes of your life: 1) RAM is a lot faster than disk, keep things there for speed. 2) "RAM is the new disk." "Or is disk the new RAM?" 3) 5 ads for Java companies. Nowhere does it say that Facebook is running the wor

The Circle line tracks are ridiculous. But may I suggest the Victoria line, the Central Line, the Piccadilly Line? The regular busses and the night busses are so much better than what the MBTA's offering, as far as surface transport.

Yeah, the same separation between small assets available quickly and big assets available slowly is how Amazon recommends you separate data between SimpleDB and S3. I'm quite fascinated by all the ways we'll be able to persist data.

The point is not how much you can store and how fast you can access consecutive sectors. The problem is that spinning platters have been stuck at 100 random seeks / second for the past 20 years, and most database struggles have been based

So, if you've got all those in-memory data structures, there are lots of lists of pointers to objects. How does it compare on a 32-bit OS, with 32-bit pointers, vs a 64-bit with 64-bit pointers?

They're willing to pay more for a better experience; that's why they bought the iPhone. Apple made their side of the buying process really wonderful, and the content providers did the same, and the buyers have had generally positive reactio

Easy. Control is wherever you want it. The physical key it should correspond to is Caps Lock, and it's all in software, so here we go: Apple Menu, System Preferences, Keyboard&Mouse, then (all the way at the bottom of the window) Modif

The SAT has been accused of bias itself (to get the analogy runner:marathon::oarsman:regatta, you need to know what a regatta is -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAT#Bias ) and this is pretty well-known. That's why it's a small part of an

The list price, not the sale price. They can discount it 30% and still get half. Why would you want to do this? Valve, recently, discounted a game by 50% and got a 30x increase in sales.

So, one of the new things about Scheme in the late 70s was having TCO in the spec. Strictly speaking, it's not Scheme (though it may be just another lisp1) if tail-recursion isn't baked in.

That was the interesting thing for me: not that you couldn't do it in a shorter number of characters, but that it was 7 lines of code written for people to read, and incidentally for machines to execute.

You'd mentioned that your server was running out of memory, and it looks like the post-a-reply urls have changed, no longer exposing the id of the continuation. How will you scale up HN for its exponential growth? Will the OS memory manage

Just remember, if you're in Ruby working with strings, you want a local variable, because MRI leaks memory otherwise. See http://groups.google.com/group/god-rb/msg/3f5b13d6d4fa6480

I'm using Sinatra et al for my thesis project, for a Master's in Latin, and minimizing the non-interesting bits of infrastructure helps a lot. It's interesting to me for the same reason PHP is interesting: it helped me wrap an HTTP interfac

When I think of Twitter, "focus" isn't the word that comes to mind. A focus group seems like an artificial channel; you can't possibly hear what 100k people are saying about your product, so you pick 200 and you hope it's a random sample.

I always get nervous when I see Haskell/MzScheme/etc bits about "Here's how to make a web server!" or "This is how you parse JSON!". Where's the "this is how you make a blog in 15 minutes", where the blog's code looks as well thought-out as

It's interesting to note that, of the two software companies mentioned, Google's feedback loop is a lot shorter than Microsoft's. If they find a bug they can, theoretically, patch it then and there, whereas Microsoft does something like P

Uh, here's how a hash table is commonly built. Ruby's may be optimized, but the jist is the same. You have N buckets, a hashing function for key => bucket #, and each bucket has a linked list of value pointers. You hash the key down t

The same problems of people being able to move fast without exertion or neighborly interaction seem as true for this PRT as for cars. What's the problem that they're trying to solve? People want to talk on their cellphones and read a book
