I was living up in Stoke Newington when I was in London (N16 7AJ repreSENT!), and that's under 10 minutes to the Lea River and Regent's Canal, both of which are fantastic cycling routes. The Grand Union is also delightful, especially with

Okay, so why isn't "Center" centered? With the CSS, Top Center Bottom are all centered, but with the tables, they're not. Edit: am I wrong? Why am I being downvoted? I'm on Mac OS X 10.5 Safari 3.2.1

What type of a platform? Do you have any code sketches to demonstrate the ease of doing otherwise tedious tasks, like in the Pig and Sawzall papers?

A couple ways -- USB-powered electric gloves, combined with enough not-typing and cardio to make sure the blood's still flowing. (Mozart and his wife, for example, used to dance in their cold apartment to keep warm.)

Boloco's okay, there's one on Boston & Winthrop in Medford, and some other sprinkled around town. Have you tried the Blue Shirt right in Davis Sq? As far as cheap and easy food, pizza and bagels here seem like the burritos of SF.

That sounds pretty much like why PHP won; the effort of making a programming language work (ie the standard library) overshadows the effort of implementing better abstractions.

That looks really cool; how's that been working out? Is that in production? If Ruby had Gambit Scheme's serializable continuations, that would be pretty interesting times.

Ruby + Sinatra for now. It's great for tiny services that work together. A full web service to implement '/add/1/2' is just require 'sinatra'; get('/add/:a/:b') { params[:a].to_i + params[:b].to_i }

Imagine, Facebook realizes that people just friend people willy-nilly, so they team up with Burger King to find out who people value less than a tenth of a hamburger (McDonald's quarter-pounders, if memory serves, are $1.25 or so). Pretty

You probably won't have much space if you're going to be a little widget on someone's page. 1024x768 is a safe bet, but most laptops have higher-resolution; low-end macbooks have 1280x800 default.

It's from Alan Kay, in 1971. Don't worry about what anybody else is going to do. The best way to predict the future is to invent it. "The origin of the quote came from an early meeting in 1971 of PARC, Palo Alto Research Center, fo

I learned about it in 2005, when I read it on http://pragdave.pragprog.com/pragdave/2005/11/symbolto_proc.... and it's such a good idea that they've folded it into 1.9 http://www.infoq.com/news/2008/02/to_proc-currying-ruby19

Using Symbol#to_proc, the old Ruby myList.collect { |f| f.description }.select { |d| d != "" }.join("\n") becomes myList.map(&:description).reject(&:empty?).join("\n") which is even more direct: take my list, map each

It's a fundamental problem of language design. In Lisp, extending the built-in functions is trivial, so lots of people built Lisp up into the language to solve their problem in, and Ruby makes it easy to do the same. Rails is extends the l
