It becomes outright silly when US recruiters are charged with going through non-US resumes. We've had an Irish engineer being asked if this German university is "Ivy league equivalent". To which the only possible reply is &qu

How do you ensure you're not tracked? That your location history is not sold to every bidder?

Ah yes, what kind of academic would ever write three words where one have the same meaning... And make you this much closer to fitting in that darned limit.

And this is exactly why the apps failed: even HN readers don't know how they work.

There's been some research on coyotes or similar animals, can't remember. They managed to figure out about 30 "words". Interestingly one of that tiny budget was for a human and another one for a human with a gun.

Just yesterday I had a colleague ranting about availability in Ireland. Not even price spike, outright no stock of any non-obsolete models.

We're SREs working on the rollout system used for vast majority of internal software. The component in quesiton collected enough tech debt to start showing "unfixable" defects, but still not enough to justify anything more th

The folk hanging around to ask follow-up questions are my bet. Some of the questions really show the person is sharp enough to suggest you can put them into the system. Obviously this misses the good leads that simply don't care about

Oh, it is causing pain already. Recently I pitched to a friend fixing a component as a great project for a very junior engineer. Only to find out that neither his nor my team has any sufficiently junior engineers on hand. So the oceans will

Unsolicited resumes are the most noisy channel of all. TBF I'm somewhat surprised it is even cost effective to keep reading them. But, send an engineer to spend an hour talking at a university and you get a bunch of very promising lead

This is really unsurprising for an European. Where I live, a couple day hike can take you to places where people speak at least 6 distinct languages. It's rather obvious that any attempt at mobility will cause you to be treated as an i

Don't they use some reasonably reviewable methods, like regular expressions? And, more importantly, reviewable volumes? Also, an ad blocker can always have a debug mode, where it can show you a rule that removed the element. With ad bl

That's a train with a busy time table. Every software engineer who ever wrote a comment on the web, got an idea how to make our better at some point. And it isn't a problem with a high barrier to entry. The interesting, for me, pa

Today's "fun" is tomorrow's microaggression. In the dynamic modern society, the only way to be respectful of future marginalised societies is to prohibit "fun". In case of doubt, if any word you used felt like

Today I've heard fellow SREs discussed whether RRDTool is the best solution for monitoring private things. Its only merit: it stopped evolving. Might or might not outweigh the decades of progress.

Why? I appreciate the coolness factor. But, unless the payload can be enough to pull off a 1998 Bruce Willis, what's the immediate benefit? Or, would this be fundamental to some research?

This is now institutionalised as The Right To be Forgotten. Every search engine doing business in the EU has implemented it. Most probably only offer it to Europeans.
