When you pay serious money for your development tools, you tend to not give stuff away for free. And this is what Berin's article is all about: culture. The culture of free vs. pay. I did AMX (the automation company, not the credit company)

Yes, we need more lawsuits like this (I know it is a joke, but they should actually make the motions to go through with it) to show the complete absurdity of these other suits.

I have never understood, either, why something like "new window" is actually "Command N" (as labeled in the menu), when it is really "Command n". "Command N" is actually: "Shift, Command, n" (as the shift key makes a lowercase key uppercase

My sole reason for picking Linode for hosting was RAM, as there was no one else out there who matched the RAM for the price. And now, WOW, I am a very happy customer. Thank You, Linode!!!

America (and we are not alone) is in a race to the bottom. Just like Coke and Pepsi spend more an more each year on advertising,-- because the other does the same -- doesn’t mean they are making that much more in profits each year. The sam

I use RPX only on my site, and the first time someone signs in they can choose a username other than the one which was forwarded by the AuthN provider. So, using RPX does not preclude you from offering custom usernames to your users.

This is a really great post. Why more startups don't use something like RPX from JanRain is beyond me.

Many people believe that the sole reason the Japanese car companies started to beat the American car companies in the late 80s was because of quality. I think that is only part of the reason... To me, the biggest reason was choice and the p

The print media needs to come up with a system for micro payments, and fast. I am not going to pay for a subscription to NY Times online, but I will hit a TipJoy-like button to give $0.10 - $0.25 every time I watch a NY Times cooking video!

Is it a "Blackboard killer" because it is by Google or because it is OSS? http://moodle.org has been around for a long time, has attracted many Blackboard defectors, and yet Blackboard is still around...

Sorkin is a fantastic writer. Some of the best TV shows of the past 12 years (The West Wing, Studio 60, Sports Night) were written by Sorkin. When I first heard about Sorkin doing a Facebook movie I was dismayed. However, now, given all the

I loved the BeOS -- happily discarded Mac OS 8 when BeOS PR1 came out -- and I am so happy to see Heiku OS on the front page of Hacker News. To this day, the BeOS is still the OS which brought me the most fun on a day-to-day basis.

docs.com is owned by Microsoft, so the use of Silverlight is to be expected. (Note: Not that I agree with it, but just wanted to point out the true owners of the site.)

Given that our government requires the destruction of storage devices to protect their secretes from seeing the light of day, I have to wonder why anyone would ever want to risk it: http://www.nsa.gov/ia/guidance/media_destruction_guidance

In general, you can't really scrub a hard drive. No company in their right mind should ever let an old computer go out the door with a hard drive in it. Hard drives should be destroyed. I recommend something like this: http://www.youtube.c

This is a horrible analogy. When you produce music it doesn't have to hook into an external API. Can badly produced music crash a device (aside from the user's ears)? No.

A story like this and its comments really show that people do not value their time very much. Never having to go out of your way to buy stamps again far, far, far outweighs the cost of buying tomorrow's stamps with today's money. For instan

I completely agree with Paul and the others at Ycombinator. Although my writeup was specifically about control systems, my point is that this device is not about eBook reading, so comparing it to the Kindle is a waste of time. My writeup ca

I used this app today to figure out a font that I have been wondering about for a long time. After about 30 questions, it got it correct (at least the answer looks identical to the font I've been looking at for so long). Very useful app.

"How did Google find out the other companies were being targeted?" Google runs data centers, and probably sees a lot more traffic than for its own services. Also, who is to say these companies are not using Google products (Gmail, Docs, etc

This info was from a phone call, so unless it was recorded, there is nothing to prove what the content of the conversation was, or if there even was a conversation at all. This story sounds pretty sketchy to me.
