Alright, even with ECC and much faster DDR4 ram: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct16g4rfd4213 and motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157...

I guess it depends on the requirements a lot. Are you guys set on using ECC RAM and microATX mobo? It would be much cheaper to use some sort of gaming cpu + DDR4 non-ecc RAM. For example, microatx mobo: http://www.newegg.com

Wow, all the components are crazy overpriced. You can get the same system built for probably 1/3 the price with the same level of quality. Example is the motherboard for $500+, the fans for $20 each, on off switch for $25, 8gb of DDR3

Depends on the person. Basically, to be good at both is a lot harder than writing a web app. A lot of bioinformatics is implementing elaborate algorithms in a memory efficient way. Things like - approximate string search using modified suff

Biotech also pays a lot less. If you look at current jobs such as "bioinformatics programmer", the salaries are somewhere between a biologist and a software engineer even though it requires more knowledge than either. Remember, b

Very easy to have all kinds of memory leaks right now for one. It is really a combination of Javascript and the DOM. Unpleasant to use is definitely a big thing too. If it was easy and pleasant, nobody would complain.

I think cryptolocker actually decrypted the FS after the ransom was paid. So sometimes it works. Actually, it makes no sense to not follow through because that is their business model.

Sure, but my point is that it's not a relevant comparison. A relevant comparison is counting words or something like that. Things people don't have an easy way to do much faster.

That's why you don't use pure python for this. Here is your test done using numpy import numpy as np %timeit sum(np.sum(np.random.randint(0, 10000000, 5000)) for i in range(5000)) 1 loops, best of 3: 586 ms per loop

Devs are already aware of PyPy. If it was as easy as being aware, everyone would switch tomorrow. The problem is that tons of code uses C extensions created with swig or python boost and those take a lot of time to port to PyPy. Another pr

Elastic Search is a wonderful db for storing all sorts of text data. Having said that, I wonder if there are any plans to make querying more succinct in the future. Right now you have to write 20+ lines of unintuitive code to make a relativ

I think it would be useful if the companies buying the TLDs were not allowed to buy more than 100 or so of 2nd level domains within that TLD and forced the price to be something non-trivial like $30. Then owning all the 2nd level domains wo

The grep one is tricky. If no characters match, it's fast. But if some match, and if it is ignoring case, it's much slower. It's actually faster to read the whole file into memory, lowercase it and check with python for inde

The demo should really be 128 thousand elements or 128 million. 128 elements is still useful for when you have an inner loop that has a small vector operation. Most of the time this is not the case though.
