And I don't get how you can be so defensive about Electron. It's technically inferior to literally any native solution such as wxwidgets or Qt. RAM usage, CPU cycles, Hard drive space... it's such a disrespectful stance on co

The "anti Facebook slant" is rooted in a history of complete disregard for user data and privacy, so I find it warranted.

I refuse to believe this is due to technical reasons, as long as we are talking ACID compliant data storage. A well configured PostgreSQL will blow MongoDB out of the water while actually caring about your data.

Electron is almost never a great choice for anything. It saddens me to see people on a website for nerds defend it.

People opting to use a meme "database" instead of a real DBMS is kind of a large red flag to me. I am hard pressed to imagine data more relational than chat messages and user accounts.

It saddens me that a developer decided to stuff json into the registry, when it's perfectly possible to instead store nice and compact binary data structures. But this is 2021, can't have efficient data representation anymore.

What a breath of fresh air, finally somebody not using Electron. Great job.

This sounds like something you can get with other languages which compile to native x86_64 or arm or whatever - specially the single executable concept is ages old and predates the entire internet. Why use js, which is slow?

It's possible to create GUI applications with under 10kb in size, if you link dynamically and use raw win32 api. Pretty sure that my personal wxwidget stuff was way under 100kb too back in the days. Never used GTK directly on linux, bu

I really, honestly hope that this by some miracle will not happen. The "modern web" is the most bloated, slow and inefficient mess imaginable. Not knocking the browsers themselves, those are marvels of engineering, but yeah.

No matter what the cost per MB, why is it completely normal for everybody nowadays that websites can be multiple million bytes in size? It's text after all. Boggles my mind.

Or maybe we should blast it into the sun. On a more serious note - something went terribly wrong if we consider it a good idea to keep wrapping (slow) abstractions and wrappers around things which work perfectly fine.

It's actually Qt-widgets if I am not completely mistaken. Also, the reason why not more companies do this is unfortunately cost, it's much easier and thus cheaper to just cobble together some electron trash.

I'd counter argue that it's maybe not that bad to have proven, formally validated software in the field, which is what traditional software developers in the automotive sectors did for decades. You tend to push out less crap if yo

I did not mean to come about as cynical, I simply do not understand this mindset. If you identified a problem, why not fix it? Why keep on making the same decision with the same deterministic outcome?

Good idea, but why JSON? And why HTTP content headers? I much prefer binary protocols, but I'm probably within a minority on that one.

Yeah, I feel that they should actually make it default. By the way, check out Codetyphon [1], if you don't know it already. That is one hell of a component and library collection, and it has a lot of added features for the IDE. Really

I propose on building native tools that have all relevant libraries statically linked. Yeah, executable will grow in size, but it's the best of both world : portability, speed and not using javascript.
