It won't be long before companies are making extra-high bandwidth auto-playing ads to eat your allowance, not to mention the improved location tracking due to smaller cells.

Of course... and they'll be better targeted to your precise location for tracking purposes too!

Apart from DRM, if you stream or "buy a download" of an Album, many have watermarks which in some cases are audible and may detract from the listening experience.

Quite... I'd often see between 30% to 70% (and occasionally worse) packet loss... sometimes pinging 8.8.8.8 would take over 6000ms for a response!

India's mobile data may be cheap, but it's also pretty poor. It may be 4G technology, but speeds are far below what's common in the UK / Europe. Last week in Delhi I was getting anywhere between a few kbps and ~2-3Mbps

Yes, precisely... rather disappointing that HN users -- the very people you'd expect to know the difference between one protocol and "a set of them" would make this mistake - what hope is there for Joe Public :/

Thanks for mentioning "chappals" - In my experience (currently month 21 in India over the last 14 years) this term usually refers to a generic type of open-ish, often plastic or rubber, shoe - anything between a "flip-flop&qu

On Windows "foobar2000" is fantastic for playback and transcoding, looks pretty basic, but performs well and has lot's of plugins to modify look and feel as well as extra functionality. On Mac, XLD is great for ripping and tr

Relive the memory by piping everything through Brendan Gregg's wonderful "baud.pl" script [0]. Truly nostalgic! (Using "baud.pl" is much smoother than trying to recreate the effect by piping through `pv`) [0]: http

Okay, let's jump forward in time a little ... When FR is ubiquitous, we'll need a different mask for each section of the journey to prevent being tracked end to end. Also Gait-DNA will soon be ready to implement, of course it'

Looks more like a "condensation drip about to fall" than a tear drop... Not very catchy though, perhaps "innovative CDATF notch - uses 66% less screen space" would sound hype enough for the Marketing department?

Yes, but like most of these, that's really to do with the fact that E2E is part of the WebRTC spec, so anything built on it is safe for audio & video... the main advantage of Signal here is not leaking all your metadata.
