> as long as latency is known? Ah, but how do you know latency, without accurate clocks? :) Accurate clocks facilitates measuring latency, which is used to calculate distance. :)

Seconding this, Greg Egan is one of the best of all time. The short stories "Luminous" and "Dark Integers", the novels "Diaspora" and "Schild's Ladder". So good. qntm (another author) hits somew

I don't know if I would trust the implicit editorial lens of popularity on Wikipedia as my only window into the world.

Interesting. I've tried to use it for a few things, it works where I'd expect -- make a scaffolding for a simple Java project, edit this English -- but whenever I then try to use it for Real Work, things that require some thought

Damn, I would really like such a thing, if it was just the hardware and not the associated lock in to a third party getting their grubby hands on my internal metrics. I'd pay a premium for it even, which makes you wonder just how much

It's quite good at following a detailed paragraph long description of an scene, which is a double edged sword. A lot of the fun for me with early text to image models was underspecifying an image and then enjoying how the model "

Can I please, please, please, have C++ or at least C bindings? :) Or the desired way to call Rust from another runtime? I don't know any Rust.

Just offering another point of data, your observation of the "same space with no overlap" and the anecdote about the restaurant hits so true for me! Almost the exactly same thing happened to me, Spanish nearly the whole time. La

This is really fun. Multiple questions seem to yield a blank page, does this mean it's hugged to death, or are my questions too difficult? :) I'm enjoying probing the bounds of understanding by giving progressively harder problem

Borderline dangerous software. If it was reliable and worthy of supporting a stack, it wouldn't be Windows only. By being Windows only, it conveys "toy" status. Professional database engineers don't use non-Linux, henc

Wait, so you don't think that China is a brutal country that doesn't give a damn about the lives of their people? Leaving out the deeply incorrect "stone age" part, that strikes me as a perfectly reasonable objective f

Gross. Why in the world do I want a gif for a tiny code release? Just read the source. This looks extremely interesting, considering the author I'm inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. The source looks fugly, but who cares,

Shrug. People will always care about performance because they will always want more functionality. I bet you care about the performance of your database or how fast your pages load. You want your streaming videos to be skip-free and your p

"Isolating" is where the performance (innovation) is. I used a very similar setup, first time I needed to implement a tree. Now, I'm a fan of Eytzinger layout. (referenced in a previous comment in this thread) Yeah, most cod

I'm interested in the same stuff/area. There's a lot of great results to read, check out cache-oblivious B-trees by Dr. Demaine (or honestly anything by him.) This link is a good distillation of some of the concepts. http

I wonder if one could use raw data like this to build a sort of spam filter for papers. Perhaps there are common metadata (institution?, date?, time?, name?, topic?...) among BS papers that could be part of a classifier score? I know that
