I found this project that would fit the bill: http://fabien-d.github.com/alertify.js/ See "Customizable Log Messages".

Solid underlined words take us to other places. Dashed is less defined outside of people who find CSS novel, or just want to be different. If a site uses solid underlines for its links, that frees it up to use dashed for these inlines IMO.

I can see this being used most effectively as an enhancement in a display/view context rather than replacing traditional forms. Take the example of a table of employee information where you have the standard edit/delete/view buttons on each

I agree that the benefits are not well understood to those outside of the tech world and to them DDG is definitely a me-too site.

Turning off personalized results doesn't stop Google from tracking you, it just stops leveraging that tracking for your benefit. And I misspoke about the bang syntax: it actually runs a search on the target website. If you search for "fooba

DDG doesn't track you[0] or put you in a filter bubble[1]. They also have the bang syntax[2] for searching other sites/engines. 0: http://donttrack.us/ 1: http://dontbubble.us/ 2: http://duckduckgo.com/bang.html

This was my initial reaction as well, but I appreciate the qs/hash sugaring: http://www.domain.com/path/index.html?query1=test&silly=willy#test=hash&chucky=cheese $.url('?'); // query1=test&silly=willy

I would imagine the audience of HN to care more about larger concerns more so than the general population, but I don't know how much higher those numbers would be. I don't buy Apple products for the very reasons you cite, but there is consi

The balance between user voting and mod/admin curation is a tricky one.

But a lot of people don't care about that. It's fine to say "I don't buy Apple products because their policies are X, Y, Z". It's not fine to tack on "And you're [insert insult] for not realizing/caring and buying anyway".

Fair enough. I would no more blame the manufacturers of spoons for America's obesity rates than I would this developer for incorrect application of this demo. Although, this demo is the equivalent of a spoon manufacturer demonstrating their

The problem is that we'll get people using this in a primary role on their sites/apps because it's novel and people love using novel things. In order to have that "fun" look, you have to have a pretty long animation duration (currently ~3 s

If a user knowingly choses to install a plugin that includes Sambreel, it's not a scam. It's their browser to do with what they will. Having said that, I'm guessing that there are a lot of scummy plugins/extensions that don't alert the user

I'm picking up what you're putting down, but I was thinking more placeholders vs. mixins. Although I guess placeholders would avoid this code bloat too, and they can be used as selectors.

All programming? Hardly. In pretty much every ecosystem I've seen, there are standard patterns for doing things because they've been proven. Even just taking your own experience, you probably have patterns you use to solve problems. Sometim

Yup, I've been using mixins for a while now to reduce code bloat. It seems like placeholders are degenerate forms of mixins. edit After more reading, they are most definitely not degenerate forms of mixins. Placeholders FTW!

Could be that it's just "creative" as design department vs "coder" as development department. Having said that, I agree that there can be great creativity in programming.

Why is that problem? Just because someone wouldn't define their job or profession as designer doesn't mean they can't have opinions.

While I agree 100% with your advice for mission-critical servers, for a dev machine I don't see the problem with the ease of curl -> sh. It takes "very very very bad idea" down to "you probably should at least check out the installer sc

Let's not run an extra let statement if we don't have to! if (== != === || == !== ===) let == = ===;

Right, but their care about the customer is a means to an end. The way some people talk about it makes it sound like they believe that Apple has genuine care for their customers as an end in itself.

It's things like this that come to mind whenever someone speaks about how Apple really cares about their customers and making their lives better. They're a technology company. They care about money.

Could be, but considering s/he has them in a list, I took it to mean that it was three independent clauses that s/he derived from iOS. If the identity was derived from the first two, I would expect it to be phrased differently.

You know, I was going to write that it was a given since CSS is applied to a markup language so you need some sort of markup, and that you were being pedantic. But then I thought it would be neat if someone were to make the Mona Lisa as A
